Well, more or less. I have a good deal of my ducks in a row at this point (man, I wish I had a pet duck. Or a chicken. I've always wanted to keep chickens). At least as far as classes and finances (to a point).
I'm currently taking online classes through the Art Institute. I recently finished Nutrition (goddammit now I am a LABEL READER - eugh) and working on Management and Supervision in Hospitality/Culinary which is kind of like bullshit but I need it for the degree. And who knows - I might get to boss people around someday.
I begin physical classes October 6th. I only have classes Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday which is a fabulous change; all throughout college I had very regular English classes which always seemed to fall on MWF schedules. This compact week will give me ample time to work and, ideally, get a day off to see people who are awesome (so, you know, NOT
rspeed).
Monday 8am-11:40am Food Safety and Sanitation
Monday 12:30pm-5:05pm Concepts and Theories of Culinary Techniques
Tuesday 12:30pm-5:05pm Fundamentals of Classical Techniques (Lecture, I think)
Wednesday 12:30pm-5:05pm Fundamentals of Classical Techniques (Lab)
Of course, these classes are not free, nor is my rent. I finally seem to have Sallie Mae on a short leash (they had me in their system as taking out TWO loans for $13,000+ AHAHAHAHAHANO) and I got my refund check with my Title IV funds (leftovers that I asked for specifically to pay for rent and living costs every month should I fail utterly to find work, OR should I find work but it is insufficient to pay for rent, food, and gas each month). So now I am all set for the next quarter, $3,000 check in hand (yeah, it's way too much but I got the max I could JUST IN CASE because who knows when something in your life will go horribly wrong?). Unfortunately a big chunk of that just vanished for September's rent plus about half of my ever-mounting credit card bill (AUGH INSURANCE. AUGH GAS. AUGH LIFE) so it seems like a much less impressive check really quickly.
I've been working temp jobs on a pretty day-by-day basis (ie I've only had two assignments so far) but they pay well enough. I plan to speak to the Ai career services but not today. The receptionist tells me two of the three career counselors called out and one is shouldering all of their loads and thusly the place is packed. No thanks. I'll go back another day.
I have a nice room in a nice house in a nice neighborhood with a nice dog (not mine - but he tries to hide under my bed and steal
Clyde) and a someday-parrotlet (hopefully mine - tragically I have fallen in love with a light blue/white mutation pacific parrotlet named Mr. Finnegan who lives in New Jersey and can probably never be mine) and a nice boyfriend (fajitas and Enterprise!)and nice friends (NOT ROB SPEED) and nice parents and okay hair (well, some days it's nice) and a nice lime green kitchen aid and easy metro access to DC and Arlington.
Life is good right now. And I'm grateful.
Oh and P.S. Dragon*Con attendees: PLEASE IMBIBE AND ATTEMPT TO DRUNKENLY GROPE NATHAN FILLION FOR ME K THANKS.
