His arms are wrapped around the sobbing girl in the plant fort, unsure of what to do to make things better. She's clutching to his shirt, head buried in his shoulder. Dave has never felt so useless in his life. Of course she's upset -- Jade has never done something to hurt another person, and suddenly she wanted to hurt people she loved, people she swore to always protect.
"Jade, you didn't mean it. That wasn't you."
"But-- I hurt people! If I remember it, doesn't that make it me?"
Truth is, Dave isn't sure any more. He remembers, of course -- how could he not? The girl who looks out for everyone's best interests was suddenly interested in helping in different ways. Permanent ways, ways that could have killed people. And he's scared, slightly, of how his friend who loves people so much could willingly accept that. But he doesn't want to make it worse -- that's the last thing he wants. Dave is just glad that she came to him. But with the other Daves avoiding her, it isn't as if she had much choice.
So he sighs. And he lies.
"No. Definitely not you. You're too nice for that, you're just tired."
five.
"Isn't it awesome?"
She grins at him, proudly displaying the inner skeleton of the creature she's creating. Her new knitting skills and some haggling had gained her access to all the tools she could possibly need for the projects she had planned. Right now, Jade was creating a robot akin to the bunny she had created the year before. It didn't move yet -- she hadn't hooked together the circuitry -- but the thing's blank, green eyes stare at Dave knowingly. He frowns, taking a step back out of sudden fear and desperation. Jade makes a face, confused.
"What's wrong? I mean, I know I'm not done, but did I mess up somewhere?" She looks back at the framework, reaching for a wrench to check a few places. Dave shakes his head. He wasn't about to explain that she was creating a thing he hated, that reminded him too much of not being himself, of being ripped at the seam. Though he was sure that Jade's robo-whatever would be adorable, it didn't mean he had to like it.
"Nothing. Robots just look weird."
"Oh. Why?"
"They're just not human, i guess."
Without another word, Dave turned and left, leaving Jade to stare at the framework.
