"It's time to leave," Will Turner said, but Norrington shook his head. Bile rose in his throat, and when Turner put a hand on his shoulder, he struggled not to flinch.
"You're free," Turner repeated.
Norrington stared out into the dark. "I have nothing to go back to," he admitted. "I regained my position at the cost of my honor and my life."
"You've rebuilt your life before," Turner reminded him.
He let out a laugh that sounded like a sob. "Look how it ended." And then he was sobbing, too broken even to be ashamed.
Finally, exhausted, he slept.
