You would think that by this point, I would have had more than enough of islands. Nevertheless, I feel like this is a good place; it has a wholesome air about it. It is certainly beautiful, in an old-world-charm sort of way, and I can't complain that. A bit of fresh sea air may do me some good. Once I've settled, I should look for a quiet spot by ( Read more... )

The best stretch of beach is on the far side of the island, away from the city.

Thank you. I will certainly keep that in mind when I am ready to start looking for a permanent abode.

Oh, you meant to live at! Well, there aren't really any houses out here. Guess you could always build one, unless you want to set up a camp.

I don't think I have it in me to be building houses. I suppose I will just have to explore a bit and see what I can find.

Personally, I think houses are overrated. If you wanted to try to build one on my beach, I'd let you. But you'd have to pay a tribute!

Do you really? Well, some of us are fond of our creature comforts. But I'm not sure I have anything that would make a worthwhile tribute, even if I was planning on building a house.

I don't ask for much. Just tie out a bit of livestock every now and then and I'll come and get it. A good fat chicken is fine. Maybe a goat...

I haven't got any livestock, nor am I likely to. I wouldn't know how to take care of it if I had it. I'm a painter by trade. You aren't going to get anything like that from me. Haven't you ever heard of a starving artist?

I knew an artist before coming here. He certainly wasn't starving, though. Had the patronage of the Blue Knight Earl.

Well, I doubt I'll starve, either, if it comes to that, but I expect it will be a little while before I have enough reputation to earn a few patrons of my own.

If I ever need a picture painted, maybe I'll come see you. I pay in fish, though.

A unique means of payment, that. Tell me, do you also demand tribute for me to stand on your beach with my paints and easel for a few hours?

It has to be fish. A friend of mine doesn't approve of fairy gold.

I guess I could let you do that. But I might come along to watch you paint.

Well, fish are a fair bit more useful than fairy gold, I would say. At least fish stay put long enough for you to fry them up and eat them.

That would be fine. I generally work my best with an audience.

I've been away from my beach for a couple of days. I should probably go back there and make sure none of those pirates are trying to sneak around that way. I could come get you and show you the way there if you want.

And what would I do if there happened to be a pirate on that beach? I doubt an eyepatch is enough to convince them that I'm not a defenseless civilian.
