The cloak, it seems, hadn't been the smartest idea. But, as Tommy Anderson would later explain, in depth, every hero had to have his sidekick. Batman had Robin. Green Arrow had Speedy. Bert had Ernie. Pinky had the Brain. Superman had Lois and Jimmy and Superboy and, and this was the important one, Krypto the superdog. See? Sidekicks. Very, very important.
And, of course, every hero and his sidekick needed a mission. An enemy to fight, a damsel in distress to rescue from the clutches of said evil enemy, before, after, or sometimes even during their climatic final battle to the death, or, at least, to the pounding and the sending to jail. Which explained the cat. And their neighbour's daughter. And the jewelry (ransom) and the flour (cunning booby trap) and the fish (for the eating of flesh).
And, really, who knew a towel pegged to a dog collar could (a) stay on so long and (b) knock so many things over? That was probably important scientific information. There should be leaflets and TV specials and maybe even a Nobel prize or two. And, okay, yes, one, or two, or fifty things might have gotten a little, you know, smashed beyond repair and then ground into dust afterwards for good measure, but really, the imagination of kids, isn't it so great? The whole was actually quite funny if you looked at it right. Ha ha ha! The things kids get up to, eh? Awww.
Sadly, Tommy's mother didn't agree.
