In the end, Neo doesn't believe in anything. He does not believe in god. He does not believe in fate. He does not believe in the Matrix or Zion. He does not believe in his mission. He does not believe in prophecy or in the One. He does not believe in the machines. He does not believe in the council. He does not believe in the great unplugged. He does not believe in the war. In the end, it all comes down to a small set of known facts and nothing more; he's all out of faith.
And so he's standing there in the cgi rain, not even feeling the cold any more, not feeling the wet or the aches or the cuts or the bruises. And there's Smith, his Other, his dark self, who he has to stop. That's the point, after all. And there's Trinity, who isn't there, who is dead. Trinity is dead. Smith is here. He is Neo. Everything that has a beginning has an ending. (Except he doesn't even believe that, is waiting, is still somehow waiting for Trinity to return.)
Smith, Trinity and Neo. Here at the end, at the beginning, everywhere in between. This is all he knows. This is all there is. There's nothing left to believe.
