A couple of weeks ago I watched
an episode of the BBC's The Culture Show where Jacques Peretti examined how youtube is taking precedence over television.
Why would you want to watch a whole half-hour programme at a designated time? Gone are the days of radio times, programme schedules, running home to catch your favourite show.
Now is the time for democratic video viewing. Anyone can publish anything and most people are.
He interviewed all these teenagers who witter on about their lives to millions of subscribers all over the world. And he pronounced the death of conventional media, warning that if creators don't adapt to the new media discourse, they too will fall by the wayside.
dramatic, eh.
Such a shame, though, that most of the content on youtube is empty, self indulgent voyeuristic... beauty and quality are lost in the noise of blah blah blah trashiness and silliness...
Man i got depressed after this programme. Why bother making beautiful films when it's the sex food and toilet humour that reigns!
but wait.
a few days later i had an idea. it was the coming to fruition of a feeling i'd had for a while that art can exist within social media! it can!
and so
MINUTE CAKE was born.
the notes that i scribbled on the napkin said "daily rhythmical video diary. 1 minute in a day"
it would be an eye on the world, the likes of
Человек с киноаппаратом/Man with a Movie Camera and
Samsara, wordless, joyful, textured and coloured, graphical and rhythmical. but also disposable. for the easily-distracted.
for me i love making something new every few days, putting it up and sharing it immediately with the world.
and the idea is that the audience will get the same indulgent feeling of having constant new content as on youtube, but also be able to appreciate some beauty and thoughtfulness..

"MINUTE CAKE is a project that explores the life of film within internet culture and social media. one minute - perfect for the short attention span. an ephemeral video experience, every few days a new clip appears. personal, democratic video that is still beautiful and meaningful."
