Rules of the Kitchen

Seems like we've got a lot of new people around here. If I haven't introduced myself to you yet, I'm Rube, and I run the kitchen. I oversee breakfast and lunch, and as far as I know, Henry West is still doing dinner shift ( Read more... )

I believe I've yet to receive a key, though it might please you to know I don't require nearly as much sustenance as most. Unless, of course, tea is involved.

I'll have one for you at dinner.

Are you that snot's warden? The one who called me a servant?

Thank you very kindly.

I fear I may be; I apologise for such behaviour. I'm attempting to work on that with him.

If you want to kick the knees out from under his high horse, I need help on lunch shift.

I am taking this into very heavy consideration- I believe, in the long run, it may be very good for him. My only concern is that he will simply do nothing, leaving you greatly inconvenienced and he feeling even more belligerent. I've not had a charge more serious than my traveling companions before; what is it I should do, if I assign him to your kitchen and such things happen?

I'm pretty sure peer pressure gets people to work. He's not going to be idle for too long, with a bunch of bigger men holding sharp kitchen implements, staring him down, you know what I mean?

Oh... oh, dear. Certainly you don't allow them to act rashly with such instruments?

I've only had one violent incident in the kitchen, and it was an inmate beating another one for stealing large amounts of food.

No, I won't allow him to get hurt, but I'm not going to step in whenever someone looks cross-eyed at the kid.

Once he gets moving, he might even discover he likes cooking. Happened with JD.

I don't wish anyone to be hurt. I've no qualms with an injured pride, where it's feasible, but... well, I'm glad you won't let it go to an extreme.

I will discuss scheduling with him, then. We're currently discussing nonsense and consequences; it will be an easy fit into our conversation soon enough. What hours and days will he be required?

Let's start him out Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for lunch.

This will be splendid. I am, of course and as expected, meeting resistance- I propose a similar method to that which my mother taught me on Gallifrey when I was at his stage of rebellion.

Have I the authority to ask that he be given nothing until he has performed a task, and then given not a prepared meal, but the ingredients to make his own after the lunch hour? Supervised, of course.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. You're not starving him - just making him work for it.

Marvelous! Consider it requested, then.
