‘What the hell was that?’

Emma stood up, still a bit dizzy from the journey through the hat. She took in their surroundings, furrowing her brow. They were obviously not in the mayor’s office anymore. Instead of walls and a shiny floor there were trees and grass. And there were people there, two men and two women in weird clothes who kept their distance but were eyeing them suspiciously.

Once she was certain there weren’t any immediate dangers, Emma turned back to her… well, her family. She still tried to wrap her head around the fact that Mary Margaret and David were her parents and Ruby was… whatever she was.

She was surprised of the little pang of jealousy she felt when she saw the three of them huddled together on the ground. Obviously Mary Margaret had taken the trip harder than the others, she shakily got up with the support of both David and Ruby.

Emma bit her lip and tried to suppress her emotions.

‘I’d say we’re not in Kansas anymore.’

Snark. Much more of a comfortable territory. Though she rolled her eyes at the three blank expressions staring back at her. Right. No pop culture references. Check.

She turned to the group of people now slowly edging closer.

‘Right. Okay, let’s see if those… people can tell us where the hell we are.’

Emma and the others waited tensely as the two men and two women approached, the blond woman in the red leathers walking in front of the woman in the white dress, the man in leathers and the old man in what appeared to be some kind of robe.

When they were close enough to talk the blond woman stopped in front of Emma and looked her up and down.

‘Who are you?’

Emma wasn’t quite sure what to say so she just stood there and was a bit startled when David spoke up. She hadn’t noticed that he had come up to her and now stood at her side.

‘Hello. I’m David, this is my daughter, Emma and…’

Then everything happened so fast that Emma couldn’t quite keep track of it. David had extended one arm in a greeting gesture but the strange woman obviously didn’t like that because she took out some sort of weird humming stick and jabbed him before Emma could even blink.

David screamed and went down, causing Snow and Ruby to rush to his side. Emma knew she should probably do something about the woman who just attacked her father, but her brain didn’t seem to function properly, so she just stood there, open mouthed, while the woman in the white dress stepped up to the blond woman, giving her a reprimanding look.

‘Cara!’

‘What? They appeared out of nowhere and now he’s saying this is his daughter? He’s either lying or he’s an idiot. And I don’t like being touched.’

The black haired woman rolled her eyes, then proceeded to kneel down beside Snow, Ruby and David.

‘I think he just wanted to say hello.’

Emma turned her head to the young man who had stepped up to the group and gave her a slightly awkward smile.

‘Excuse Cara, she’s only trying to protect us. And sometimes she’s taking that a bit too seriously.’

He extended an arm to Emma, while Cara just humphed at his remark.

‘Let’s do this right, shall we? I’m Richard, this is Kahlan’ he pointed at the white dressed woman who just helped David up. ‘This is Zedd’ he pointed at the old man in the robe ‘And this is Cara.’

Emma took his hand, still a bit weary.

‘I’m Emma Swan.’ She wasn’t sure if she should introduce the others too, and Mary Margaret seemed to sense that, because she interjected.

‘I’m Snow, this is my husband David and Red.’

They all shook hands and after both parties seemed to have agreed that neither of them posed a risk to the other, they settled down in a clearing and proceeded to tell their stories.

Cara was still quite reluctant to trust the newcomers and insisted on standing guard but even she listened attentively when Snow told them about the curse and how they ended up wherever the hell they were at the moment.

Zedd had been particularly interested in the idea of travelling to other realms and he seemed to be rather confident that he was able to get them back to Storybrooke.

So the next morning after a more or less sleepless night they mostly spent bonding with each other - David and Richard exchanging sword fighting techniques, Kahlan and Red bonding over having powers that could hurt others, Zedd and Snow discussing the right way to make a stew and Emma and Cara talking about the awesomeness of red leather. Emma had to admit, she hadn’t thought much of this woman at first, but the more they talked the more she appreciated her sense of humor and her snarkiness.

In the morning all of them were a little sad to say goodbye, but Emma and the others were eager to return to Storybrooke.

So Zedd performed some kind of ritual which involved a lot of seemingly nonsensical babble and some pretty impressive fireworks.

Thick white smoke engulfed them and for a moment Emma felt like falling upwards.

Then it stopped and she found herself standing in an open space that was clearly not the woods they had just been in. But the golden brown walls with the round edges every now and then didn’t look like any room she knew in Storybrooke either.

Neither did the black haired woman, the leather clad man at her side and the grey (grey?) woman with white hair who all pointed weapons at them seem in any way familiar.

Great, where are we now?

Emma wasn’t sure she could handle any more excitement. Actually, as interesting as all of this had been, she just wanted to curl up in her bed with a hot cocoa and forget about this whole thing.

But since there were still guns pointed at them, that didn’t seem to be a valid option.

At least this time David, Mary Margaret and Ruby all stood next to her and as weird as it still felt to suddenly have a family, she was thankful for that.

The black haired woman who still pointed a weird looking gun at them shouted something that Emma could not understand.

She sighed. Oh yes, this was going to be fun. She held her hands up.

‘We come in peace. I think.’

At that, the black haired woman snorted audibly and continued to say things in that weird language. Emma looked at David, Ruby and Mary Margaret and saw the same blank expressions.

She still held her hands up but dared to step a little closer.

‘Okay, lady, we don’t understand you. Maybe you have some sort of translator? You know? For English? This is so much easier in the movies, everyone always speaks English. Though that’s kind of dumb when you think about it.’

Emma realized she rambled on and stopped, but what she had said got a reaction from the guy in black leather, who lowered his gun and cracked something that could have been construed as a tentative half smile.

‘Right? I’m always thinking it’s totally dumb.’

Emma nearly sighed of relief for the fact that someone here understood her and spoke her language, but the woman didn’t seem too pleased by her companion. She shot him a disapproving look and said something in that weird language that sounded definitely pissed.

After a little whispered conversation between those two of which Emma didn’t understand anything, he spoke up again.

‘Right. 1812. Translator microbes.’

Emma was confused by that and even more confused when a little thing that looked like an oversized mechanical bug with a French flag and the numbers 1812 painted on it, came scurrying towards her with something that looked suspiciously like a syringe, though thankfully without a needle, stretched out.

Before she could react to that strange thingie coming directly at her, David took her arm and kind of flung himself in front of her, half kicking away the mechanical bug, half making a move towards the strangers.

And again everything happened in the blink of an eye. The black haired woman obviously perceived David’s advance as some kind of threat and before Emma could even think of warning him or doing anything really, he was flat on his back - again. And Snow and Ruby were rushing to his side. Again.

Emma couldn’t really do anything but stand there and though she knew she really shouldn’t, seeing that he was her father and all that and he had just tried to protect her, she couldn’t help but admire that move. Seriously, that woman had some game.

After that, everything cooled down a bit. The man, John Crichton, explained to them how the little mechanical bug thingie would inject them with microbes to understand each other and Emma offered to be the first test subject, at which point Mary Margaret seemed to suddenly find her motherly side and refused adamantly to let her do it, taking the first shot herself.

Emma pushed the funny feelings that gesture stirred up in her aside and once they had deemed the procedure save and Mary Margaret had successfully communicated with the black haired woman, Aeryn, they all took the injections.

When they learned that they were actually on a spaceship, a living spaceship nonetheless, Emma felt like this day couldn’t get any weirder, just before she met the Pilot of this ship. Who was actually quite likeable considering the fact that he was a giant green lobster.

But what frustrated her the most was the fact that her travelling companions had a much easier time dealing with all this. She guessed it was due to having grown up in a fairy tale world full of unicorns, giants, trolls, mermaids and other creatures, but neither David nor Mary Margaret nor Ruby seemed to be taken aback much by any of the strange things they saw on this ship.

On the contrary, Ruby seemed to take quite well to Chiana, chatting and laughing with her like they’ve known each other forever and though Emma had to admit that the grey girl had something, especially in the snark department, she was still a bit too suspicious of everything to fully join in the fun those two seemed to have.

And she definitely didn’t need to join Aeryn and Mary Margaret in exchanging diapering and feeding tips (seriously, seeing her former roommate in full mom mode made her quite uncomfortable). So she rather joined David and John who tried to tackle some pretty difficult looking equations for opening a wormhole since John had said that that would be their way home.

After a few mind twisting and brain hurting hours of calculating, John finally announced that he had found the right combination and though neither of them understood anything about this, they trusted him to know what he was talking about.

So they navigated to the right location and when they got there a few days later, Emma had to admit that she was actually a bit sad to leave this weird little family and their amazing ship.

But now she was growing desperate to see Henry again, so they gladly took the offer of a transport pod and after some tear filled goodbyes boarded it and started in the direction of the wormhole.

Emma was surprised at how easy it was to fly the ship and she geeked out quite a bit over the fact that now she was able to live out every kid’s dream. But she sobered up as soon as they entered the big blue swirling thingie in front of them.

She had expected to have to land somewhere on Earth, hopefully near Storybrooke, but once they had entered the wormhole, everything went black.

White flash. A jungle. A beach. Nope, not Storybrooke either. Not that Emma had much hope that this time they would go back.

Suddenly she heard an excited voice.

"EMMA!"

"Henry?"

The last thing she expected was to find her son here. Whatever "here" was.

"What are you doing here?"

"Traveling with Grandpa Rumple!"

"Oh." She should probably be worried about magic and a price and all of that, but this was just too surreal. Even for her. "And where is he?"

"Um, I'm not actually sure," Henry replied.

"Great. Just great."

"Oh come on, Emma. We get to see all the magical worlds, it's exciting!" said Ruby. "And this one has a beach."

"And a really adorable dog! And a pirate ship! And a polar bear!" added Henry.

"Oh," Emma seemed incapable of saying anything else anymore. Though a polar bear on a tropical beach was one of the least weird things she has seen and heard of recently.

"And no one is trying to kill us," added Snow.

"Because there's no one here," said Emma, quietly enough not to be heard.

Suddenly they saw Mr. Gold walking backwards out of the jungle, trying to calm down a woman in front of him. She was holding a gun and she looked a lot like...

"...Belle?" Ruby wanted to run to her.

"Don't move!"

"Belle, sweetheart, it's me," Ruby tried negotiating from the distance.

"And me," Mr. Gold added hopefully.

"Who the hell is Belle? Who the hell are you, and what have you done to my baby?" the woman asked, pointing a gun at the person who was currently speaking.

"I shouldn't have said that thing about no one wanting to kill us, right?", Snow said to no one in particular.

Suddenly there was a flash of bright light and a really loud noise (or something that felt like a noise anyway) and everything disappeared.

When their eyes readjusted, they realized that it was night. At a cemetery. When someone (something?) jumped out at them from behind a grave, everyone shrieked, though no one would admit it.

"Oops, sorry." The attacker, who turned out to be a teenage girl, shrugged and said to other teens behind her, "Not vampires."

"Vampires?", Emma thought, but didn't even say anything anymore.

"Vampires!", Henry said excitedly, forgetting about fear.

"Oh god," said Ruby. "A full moon."

"You should meet Oz," one of the teens said. "He's a werewolf too."

"What? How do you-"

"Oh, I know a werewolf when I see one. Just your reaction and all. Also I'm a witch, so-"

"Can you get her out of here? Actually, all of us? Quickly?" Emma asked.

"I can!" Mr. Gold felt offended that anyone would rather ask a kid for help with magic.

"Oh, sure, I guess... You all already seem full of magic, so it should be easy," the girl said at the same time, but by the time she started the spell, Mr. Gold started one too. A rainbow explosion made them land...

"Home!" exclaimed Ruby with relief.

"Home...", said Henry, disappointed.

"Woah. This place. So much magic. I love it!" the teenage witch from the other world was almost twirling around in excitement.

"Oops," said Mr. Gold.
