Tobias had wanted to go outside and see the sunset. He loved watching the reds and purples heading down over the mountains, but no one had wanted to go down to the grounds with him. So, dejectedly, he'd decided to head to the Entrance. Aurors were always around the Entrance, so he hoped that he could stand on the front steps and watch the sunset.
It wasn't as nice as actually being on the grounds, but what could you do?
So, stepping out the doors, Tobias stopped as he saw a boy in a suit. Furrowing his brows slightly, he smiled, and stepped up to him. "Hi. I'm Tobias!"
Amaury looked down at the small boy who had said hi to him. He nodded slightly, taking note of the boy's colors. Bronze. And the muddy color that blue looks like in sunset. Ravenclaw. Such a small boy, most likely a first year, and for a split second, he almost saw a different, more mussed up first year from a few years ago, grinning cheekily up at him and holding up a lizard he had found in his scarred hands.
Amaury had to blink and shake his head slightly to rid himself of that image. This was a different Hogwarts, in darker times, and he was also a different person.
The older boy didn't reply, and Tobias gave a small sigh. Was he another one of the stuck up older people who just wouldn't talk to first years? He hated it when the older students did that to him; after all, he was a person like anyone else. Just because he was young didn't mean anything.
"What's your name?" he tried again, deciding that he should, after all, at least try to be polite.
The boy's voice broke into his thoughts and he turned back to him. "Oniyama Ryu-," he started to say and then stopped. He wasn't The Ryuu anymore, not here in England in any case. "...Amaury. Amaury Oniyama."
It was hard to hear that name again. He hadn't called himself Amaury since he had left Hogwarts and...
Best not to think about it right now.
Turning his attention back to the small boy, Amaury asked softly, "May I help you with something? Why are you out here?"
Amaury. Well, wasn't that just an odd name. But Tobias supposed that it was just Japanese, because with the look of the boy, he looked to be Japanese. He noticed the way that Amaury had started to say his name, but he didn't press it. He must say it differently in Japan, Tobias thought to himself.
"Nice to meet you, Amaury. I'm just out here to watch the sunset. I was looking for a partner, but no one would buddy up with me to actually go down to the Grounds, so I just decided to watch from the steps. It's not as good, but what can you do?" Tobias shrugged, and realized that he was babbling, as he often did. He just liked to talk, and get his thoughts out, and boy, did he always have a lot of thoughts.
"Partner? Why would you need partner to go look at Grounds?" Amaury looked at Tobias. Were they making the students have a buddy system? Was it so dangerous at Hogwarts that students could no longer be alone?
Amaury didn't like this. Perhaps it was a good thing that he came back after all.
Tobias looked curiously back at Amaury. He didn't know about the rules? Well, wasn't this a first. For once, Tobias had more knowledge about the school than an older student. So, with a slight air of importance, he smiled.
"The purebloods have been being attacked, so all the students are required to be with a buddy at all times. Are you new? How come you don't know about the rules and such?"
He looked up at him, wondering why someone so old would be so new to Hogwarts.
Purebloods being attacked? That doesn't make sense at all. The purebloods would've been the students that the Death Eaters would have left alone, the Muggle borns and the Half-Bloods should've been the ones in danger.
Interesting. And this little boy seemed to be enjoying the fact that he knew something that Amaury himself didn't. Adults really didn't pay attention to children enough, they know things that they're not supposed to know. Maybe this little boy would know a few other things too.
"I am new here, yes," Amaury told him. "I have not been in Hogwarts for almost two years now. There were no rules like this when I was here. Are there any other rules that I should know? Why are these rules there?"
Tobias shrugged, thinking. Were there any other rules? He didn't think there were, but he bit his lip. "Well, I'm not sure if there are any other rules, but there are lots of adults roaming around to catch you if you do something wrong, so it's best to stay out of trouble." He nodded slowly, and scratched his nose.
Shrugging again, he continued, "I don't know exactly, but I know that there's been some shady people here. Like, this one kid? I don't remember his name, but he's a Slytherin. A 5th year, I think... anyway, I heard that he's not actually a student. I'm not sure what's going on really, but from what I've heard," he paused, looking around to see if any of the Aurors were listening, then leaned forward, lowering his voice. "There might be a Death Eater here."
Aurors and a Death Eater? In Hogwarts? Times have changed for the worse. A Slytherin 5th year. Hmm. Amaury had a very good memory and he could remember everyone in his class quite clearly as well as people younger than him. Although students were most likely taken out for their own safety, he should be on the lookout for someone close to his age, a Slytherin male, that he didn't recognize.
He leaned closer to Tobias and in a conspiring whisper, much like the tone he used with Gillichu when they were young, he asked, "A Death Eater? Sounds scary. What else going on? How many students been hurt?"
Tobias looked up at Amaury for a moment, as if trying to judge whether or not he was seriously asking Tobias for information. After all, most older students just ignored him, or teased him; they didn't talk to him as if they were equals.
Biting his lip, he glanced around again, and said, "Well, I'm not sure about everything, because they don't actually tell me anything, but I'm small, so they don't always notice me. I've heard that three or four students have been hurt. It's been all over the school that Remy Cowan got cut open; I'm not sure exactly what happened, but some kids were saying that he had Mudblood written on his chest. Merlin, I don't mind the buddy rule, not after hearing about some of the stuff that's been happening..."
He trailed off, seeing a figure heading towards them. Biting his lip, he frowned, seeing that it was an Auror.
Chamberlayne trudged toward the pair, having heard the tail end of what Tobias was saying. Crossing his arms as he reached the pair, he raised an eyebrow. "What're you two doing out here now, and why are you discussing internal affairs that you should know nothing about?"
His tone was slightly course, and he had a serious look on his face.
Amaury straightened up as the Auror crossed his arms. He gave him a very quick look over before answering, "I have just arrived from Japan and I have no idea where to go, so I stay and keep Tobias company, he wanted to see sunset."
He looked at the sky, noting that it was twilight now. "Sunset is over. Will you be so kind to take Tobias and myself back to where we are supposed to be? I am quite lost and I am sure it is not safe here for him to go alone."
Tobias looked up, far up, to the Auror, and bit his lip. The Auror looked a bit cross, and Tobias hated to be the source of the crossness. "Yeah, sir, I was just telling him about what's been going on, letting him know that he needed a buddy, and all. That's it!!"
Chamberlayne frowned down at the first year, and looked over the Amaury. "Of course I'll show you in, that is my job, after all," he said quietly, looking back and forth between the pair, and sighing.
Amaury nodded, "Lead the way please. I have not been in Hogwarts for the past two years and I do not remember everything. I was in Gryffindor, my things are supposed to have arrived before me."
He glanced at Tobias, reassuring the small boy with a quick nod behind the Auror's back and then looked at the Auror expectantly.
Tobias bit his lip and looked over at Amaury as he spoke, before starting to walk behind Chamberlayne. Tobias was having a hard time keeping up with the man's long strides, and after a moment, he called out, "Hey, wait up!!"
Chamberlayne slowed his stride a bit as the small boy asked him to, and he cleared his throat. So, he had to go to the Gryffindor Common Room, and then the Ravenclaw Common Room... what a joy.
He didn't actually like little students, and the last time that he'd really interacted with students, he'd had an apple thrown at him.
It wasn't as nice as actually being on the grounds, but what could you do?
