#1: If, when pulling away from the gas station, you hear a loud pop followed by a clatter and then a dragging sound, it's a good idea to stop the car, open the driver's door and see what happened. When you notice that you left the gas hose attached to the car and that you just ripped it off the pump while driving away, get back in the car and screech out of there, dragging the poor hose behind you.
#2 Let's say there are only two lanes in each direction. You've made the unfortunate mistake of coming up behind a big slow truck. There's someone in the fast lane parallel to you, but you don't want to have to slow down. Instead, slowly... deliberately... just start merging into their lane, pushing them off the road.
I saw both of these things happen on a recent car trip to southern california. #1 was surely caused by fear, the guy thinking that the gas station would make him pay for the broken pump. #2 I am still confused about. There's no question the driver saw the other car, he just figured that the other car would slow down and let him in. Instead the other car crept over onto the shoulder, and then had two tires in the dirt before the car in front of him sped up enough to let him accelerate in front of the asshole. Unbelievable.
