Sam was a mess inside. The blame from Dean dying was of course resting so hard on him that adding a grain of rice to his shoulder would probably make him collapse.

After the girls had found him clinging to Dean's body, and managed to extract his arms from Dean and then get them both to the car - with help from Bobby - he had done a day of being catatonic, then only spoke really when spoken to.

Did he know that they should do next? No. Did he know what he needed to do next? Yeah. Lilith was going to die, if that was the last thing he ever did.

Ruby had hinted at some kind of training. He was pretty sure the girls wouldn't want him doing it, but he needed to get revenge for Dean's death. He couldn't just let Dean die and do nothing about it.

He stared at the wooden cross and took a deep breath. I swear, Dean, if I can't find a way to bring you back, I will make her pay for this.

Staring at the wooden cross marking Dean's grave, she felt nothing. No guilt or sadness, just vast emptiness. She was completely numb.

It was easier that way. Easier to move in the practice mechanics of a life as a hunter.

Which is why even now, she was ready to get back on the road. Get as far away from this spot as possible. Get away from the danger of feeling something.

"I'll go start the car."

Madison just waited, arms wrapped around herself. She was worried for them both and didn't know what to do or say to either of them about this. What was appropriate to say? She couldn't think of anything, so she was just staying quiet, leaving them to their thoughts.

She couldn't help but think that that wasn't quite enough, though.

Sam nodded to his sister, then when she was gone, he pulled out the necklace he had given Dean years ago from his pocket. Putting it on, he hid it under his shirt.

I swear Dean, I'm going to make her pay.

He turned and followed his sister back to the car, heading for the driver's seat. He did stop a moment to look at Madison, a hand rubbing her shoulder before he moved past her.

He had been avoiding affection since they had found him, from both his sister and his girlfriend. He knew it was hurting them, but maybe it was better they not be attached to him now.

Kat was sitting in the driver's seat, absently fiddling with the radio -- searching for anything that sounded...well, to be honest, she was just searching for anything. They didn't seem to have a whole lot of stations out here in the middle of nowhere.

As Sam approached, she shut the door, an action clearly meant to signal that she was driving. She needed something to concentrate on.

Madison reached for Sam's hand as he pulled it from her shoulder, squeezing it gently twice before she moved to sit in the backseat. The lack of affection hadn't been upsetting her as much as him not talking at all had, but she understood it, on some level.

It worried the hell out of her, though. They were both worrying her.

Sam stopped for a moment, glaring at his sister. "Out," he told her simply.

Shaking her head, she motioned to the passenger's side. "You can drive after lunch."

Oh, God... Madison thought to herself. She really didn't want to play referee right now, not over something like this.

Sam looked at his sister a moment, then just sighed and shook his head. He didn't even bother to verbally state his giving up, but just moved to the other side of the car and made to get in.

It was weird though. His spot... wrong driver. Everything was wrong and he just wanted to scream so badly but he couldn't. He couldn't show anything because the girls needed him. He was the one who had to watch over them now. Protect your sister, Sammy. Watch out for Madison.

As Sam got in the other side, Kat headed for the highway and Salem, Massachusetts. And no...it wasn't witches she was after, though there were one or two people she planned on talking to while she was in town.

No, they were there for the woman in Black. A spirit that had been haunting the old Sheriff's house for centuries.

She'd be better. Once there was 18 hours between her and Dean's body. Maybe then she'd feel something.

Madison wasn't sure where Kat was taking them, but she figured she'd found something that would lead them to a case. She wasn't sure how good of an idea it was for them to jump right back into the game so soon after someone so close to them had died, but she suspected any protests she had on the matter would be quickly silenced by either of them. Being away from where they currently were was probably a good idea, but she also thought it might be a good idea for them to get some rest once they got to wherever they were going ( ... )

Sam just closed his eyes at the touch. It was going to be a long, quiet ride at this rate. Which led to him starting to drift off after about a half hour, his eyes sliding shut as he slumped against the door.

He was exhausted but had kept fighting against it. Now that they weren't moving, not doing anything but driving, his body started to close up shop for a few hours.

Kat kept her eyes on the road, only moving when she needed to change the radio station -- having drifted out of the range of the previous one. Settling on a country station, she let the sounds of Brad Paisley fill the car as the road stretched on in front of them.

A few hours, two more radio stations, and a state line later, she pulled over at a small roadside diner. She figured starving Madison was not the nicest thing to do.

Madison had started falling asleep shortly after Sam did, after staring out the window for about a half an hour. She started waking up when she felt the car come to a stop and rubbed at her eyes, taking a look at where they'd stopped.

The car stopping brought Sam out from his nap and he blinked, sitting up in the seat a bit, trying to figure out where they were.

"Where are we?"
