Character Name: Alex Rider

Canon source: Alex Rider book series.

Personality: Alex was a snarky, smart-mouthed kid, though he is now a great deal more serious and withdrawn. He remains a fiercely determined rather headstrong person who is deeply protective of people he cares about. He's reserved and private and not a big talker, though when in danger or feeling threatened he tends to revert back to his former snarky persona as a self-defense mechanism. He is self-sufficient, resolved, and harbors a strong dislike and resentment of authority figures as well as a general paranoia of government and government agents. He's a practical and inventive thinker, extremely intelligent but only applies himself when he has a stake in the outcome. Reckless as regards to personal safety, but extremely cautious when protecting others. He finds it difficult to connect with people his age, or really anyone, though he's been working on that for the past year and has been improving. He suffers from PTSD, though the symptoms have been slowly easing recently to his great pleasure. Alex is an adrenaline junkie who's taken to extreme sports in an attempt to keep himself from missing the thrills of his former occupation. (It's not working.) He's curious, cynical, and wants to know everything he can. Extremely self-reliant and sufficient. Has a great work ethic and is a good leader, but is emotionally closed off and obsessive about details as well as manipulative. He always keeps a promise.

History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Rider_(character), but really the better overview is to read the book summaries which are all linked from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Rider

Strengths: Extremely fit and athletic. Is a black belt in karate trained in survival and several other forms of hand-to-hand combat both armed and unarmed, extremely inventive and quick-thinking. Knows first aid, radio communications, poisons, how to scuba-dive, drive boats and cars, ski, mountain climb, parachute, pickpocket, white water raft, shoot, speak French, German, Spanish, and Japanese, and play multiple sports. Has been learning hacking in his downtime and is becoming pretty decent. Very resourceful.

Weaknesses: Still only sixteen, which restricts his size and strength. Suffers from PTSD, personal symptoms of which include paranoia, extreme dislike of cars and explosions, nightmares, and panic attacks. Injuries from previous missions and recent events include a bullet wound just above his heart that sometimes causes him trouble and a right shoulder that's been dislocated multiple time and is now prone to it. He's still recovering from a fractured wrist several months ago, though it's mostly healed now. Far too reckless with his own safety.

Preferred drop-in point: Manhattan.

What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? Separated from everyone he cares about and thrown into a completely new location, Alex's first reaction would be to evaluate the situation and then look for a way to play it to his advantage. He would be desperate to return home, willing to go to great extremes to find a way. He'd most likely return to the one thing he knows he can do well and attempt to sell his services to the government as a spy, if not just go into business as a freelancer in an attempt to discover exactly what's going on. He would be convinced that things were being kept from him and likely to attempt some rather outrageous stuff in an attempt to find out what it is. This sudden throwback to his former life would probably bring his PTSD back full force. I think he could become an interesting wild card, willing to do almost anything if he thinks someone can give him what he wants - a way back home. Socially, he's not going to be easy to get along with. He's self-reliant and he doesn't want to get attached to anyone. On the other hand, he's still very young and anyone with a mothering instinct would probably want to try to protect him. I'd like to see him start by freaking out and after a period of going extremely unstable and wild card hopefully he'll start building relationships against his will and coming to accept that there is no way home.

First Person Journal Sample: [The camera turns on facing Alex, who is sitting crosslegged on the floor. Alex is furious and determined, and it's clear from his face what he's feeling. If someone looked closely they would see a nervous tic just below his left eye jumping and notice that his left hand is shaking.]

Hello. I've been told that this is how I communicate with all of the rest of you. Well, that's good, because I have something to let you all know.

I don't know whose fault this is. I don't know why I'm here. I don't know where here is. But I'm going to find out.

[He leans in closer, and there's something very hard and cold and older than his years in his face.]

And when I find out whose fault this is? I'll be coming for you.

[He stares at the screen for a long moment as if trying to look through it to those watching, and then turns it off.]

Third Person Sample: It's cold in here, the heat not kicking in just yet. Two exits, though the window in the bathroom would be a needlessly loud way to get out. The door's got a deadbolt and chain, but one good kick would knock it down. The vents are too open, it would be easy for someone to slip gas through them. The water supply is common, so it's unlikely to be poisoned though it's still a possibility. There's no cover in the room worth getting behind. Outside the best bet is to head for the parking lot and try to find a car to use. He wishes there were alarms to check. Back home he checked them every night. It didn't actually mean he was safe, but it made him feel safer. It was one of the reasons he never did sleepovers. (The other reason being that he was a social pariah at school, Sabina's help or no. He was bad at being normal, still.)

He doesn't want to be here. They don't want him here either, which feels like it should make things easier but doesn't actually. At least there's no need for complicated emotions or stunning revelations about his past or world saving. Just the cold facts. This is an alternate universe. He's surrounded by people with comic book powers, most of whom could outmatch him in a fair fight with almost no effort. It's a good thing he doesn't fight fair, then. Sabina and the Pleasures are a dimension away, which is really close in some ways and impossibly far in others. He's supposed to believe there's no way home, to just give up because they all have. But if he can get here, he can get back. He just has to find out whose fault this is and hunt them down.

It's been a while since he did this sort of thing. (A while. One year two months 24 days since the desert.) He's going to need every advantage he can muster, every skill he's ever had. He tugs the picture of Sabina out of his wallet and sets it on the bedside table.

"I'm coming back," he tells her. "I am. I'll find a way to get back."

After a moment he picks the photo up and puts it back in his wallet, fingers lingering over her face for a moment. He's not staying here, not for long enough to need to put photos up. He's going home no matter what it takes.
