Is it worth making friends here when it's only a matter of time until they're taken away...? I didn't really want to think like this, but after being here for so long and seeing so many good people get sent back...

I just don't really know anymore. I know even less of what's going on, but I'm willing to guess it's nothing good. If that's the case ( Read more... )

So, people do get sent back home, then? And has anyone ever managed to return home as the result of a good, old-fashioned escape?

I don't think so...

Besides, if they did go back home, they wouldn't really be able to tell us about it, right?

Well, no, I suppose not. Which is immensely inconvenient, and just another reason why I can't understand why no one has invented the interplanetary, interdimensional telephone yet.

Still, I always think that it doesn't hurt to ask about these things, just on the off-chance that anyone had shared any escape plans before vanishing.

No way, phones can't really do that!

... Can they? Oh wow, I'm so behind in the times.

I guess you must be new around here?

Some phones can, but it's really rather tricky. Almost more trouble than they're worth. I haven't run across that sort of thing very often, though, so I don't think you really qualify as being behind the times.

Yes, that's right. I arrived just a handful of days ago - although apparently I've been here before, unless all those people are just having me on about knowing who I am.

Yeah I do! I'm only from the 1990s, but there's a lot of others here from the 2000s, and some are even further than that!

Oh, yeah, that happens a lot too. Um, what's your name? Maybe we've talked before?

Well, that's not too terribly far back in terms of Earth technology. I mean, you could be from a far worse time period. Like the seventies. Their computers were total rubbish then.

Oh, have we already met, then? I'm the Doctor. And you are...?

Ugh, yeah, I don't even want to think about how labs were like! Not when I'm so used to working with high-tech equipment and stuff.

The name is Mona Lisa! Nice to meet you Doctor, uh...

I've had the very same experience. Trying to use any electronic equipment there is always a bit frustrating whenever I go back for a visit.

Pleased to meet you, Mona! And based on that strategically placed "uh," I suppose I ought to add - just "Doctor" is fine.

Go back? You mean... in time?

Doctor, right! You know, we can never have to many of those around.

I certainly do. It's...a hobby of mine.

Well, I'm a doctor of quite a few things. Not exactly a medical doctor, you see, though I'll still use any knowledge I have to help out around here any way that I can.

What kind of stuff do you know?

Maybe we can have ourselves a chat once I get warmer? I'm a bit of a physics buff myself.

Oh, a little bit of everything. Science does tend to be a specialty of mine, however.

Physics? How lovely! So few people have any real understanding of physics, but it's a wonderful field. So, I certainly agree, a chat would be quite nice at some point.

I just got two very important for you, Doc.

Do you like green, and lizards?

If you're smart, you'll say yes to both of them.

Well, since I am extraordinarily clever, I suppose both my answers would most definitely be yes.
