Recently there was a breakthrough of sorts. Baoyu is staring at Daiyu, wanting to confess how he feels, but he can't say anything. She walks away, and only then does he say everything he wants to say to her. But she's gone, and only Baochai hears.
Okay, not really a breakthrough.
Lin Daiyu seems a lot more sardonic in the book than I remember from the series.
