I've been studying Cantonese for five days now. It's been very exciting. Some things are similar enough to Mandarin that my brain is a little confused right now...
高兴 gāo xìng ----- 高興 gou1 hing3
对不起 duì bu qǐ ----- 對唔住 deoi3 m4 zyu6
But most things are very different so far. The tones are going to take getting used to, especially distinguishing between 3rd, 4th and 6th, or between 2nd and 5th. I need to keep listening, just playing conversations and podcasts in the background so the feel and flow of it becomes more familiar.
I'm having trouble getting used to the sound of (Jyutping) eoi, as in
佢 keoi5 (third person pronoun)
去 heoi3 = go
最 zeoi3 = most, -est
When I say it, it never sounds right. I don't think it's in my head yet.
I can't get traditional character entry working in Windows. I can get simplified characters to happen with pinyin, but nothing else seems to be working. On the other hand, my language study notes look great on the Kindle. It's pretty easy to make a mobi document, and the Chinese characters are very readable on the Kindle screen.
