I think there were things I meant to say, or felt and didn't know how to say (that's pretty much most of the time), when I was thinking about the Michelle West books I recently read. What really lingers now is how many interesting female characters there are, how rich and complex their lives are, how they interact and change and become something else out of necessity and drive and vision.
I'm thinking of Teresa, Kiriel, Jewel, Finch, Amarais, Sigurne, Diora, Margret, Yollana, Ruatha, Ashaf, Duster, and Alina. And they're all different, interesting people. There are more whose names I can't recall right away.
And that got me thinking about what it is that I want from stories, which is a whole nother long rambly thing, and it often depends on my mood. Sometimes I'm perfectly happy to spend time watching/reading a fairly straightforward romance or adventure, or romantic adventure -- but I really do kind of like it when I can sort of hold on to several characters as I travel through a story. In the sense that they're people I feel invested in, moved, surprised.
Meanwhile, there's a small table in my bedroom with several stacks of unread books. They wait. Some of these books seem less patient than others, but I'm pretty sure they all want to be read. Several of these stacks are under the table. Lurking.
There is a lot I want to read this year.
