Room 429 - Evening

Oct 04, 2009 11:01

While Jon was out at dinner with Claire, Edmund brought Lucy back to his room. They'd spent most of the day out with Edmund trying not to show Lucy the good parts of the island lest she get any ideas about wanting even more to come to school here ( Read more... )

"I wish it had happened while I was here," Lucy said with a heavy sigh.

"You wouldn't find it very funny if you turned into a pony. I'm more than happy to stay human and keep my opposable thumbs, thank you."

"But it's not me I want to turn into a pony, Edmund," Lucy said logically. "And I'm sure someone would feed you if necessary. If I were here, I'd make you warm bran mashes."

"Now I feel much better about the prospect of turning into something with four legs," he remarked sarcastically. He gave her a quick look of concern. "You're not coming here though, are you?" He had a disapproving lecture ready and everything.

She tilted her head, studying her hamburger intently.

"I haven't asked Aslan..."

"Will you?"

"Would that be so bad?" Lucy said, eyeing him and looking stubborn.

The irrational teenage boy wanted to stomp his foot, say yes and demand that she stay far, far away from all of the boys here. Instead, he got that look on his face as he chewed on a mouthful of hamburger, the look he had when he was officially considering something important. He swallowed his food. "No. You have as much right to be here as any of us, to have your chance to learn something that Narnia can't give you, if that's Aslan's will." He thought some more for a moment. "It would be good to have you see you and have you nearby. But," he said, and there was always a but, "why would you want to leave Narnia?"

He probably knew how much more seriously that type of contemplation made Lucy take him.

She sighed, picking at her burger. "I don't want to. I love Narnia; I don't ever want to leave." Which begged the question really. "But - what is it that the three of you are doing that's so important? What are you learning that I don't get to?"

Lucy shrugged, and her voice dropped to a whisper, almost unable to admit the last. "And if I have to marry away from Narnia, I want to know what it's like to miss it before it's for good."

Edmund's expression turned from contemplation and confusion to concern. "You know Peter wouldn't ask that of you unless there was little choice, Lu. Cair Paravel is a big place. If there's room for Willow, there's room for who you bring home too." Even if that meant that Edmund had to marry away from Narnia. "Which won't be for a long time, if you can ever convince Peter that any boy is good enough for you. And as for what we're learning, I don't know. I think Peter came here to meet Willow. Su wasn't here long, but I hope she learned not to trust boys like Chuck Bass. I haven't worked out why I'm here and I think that's why I'm still here a year later."

"I know none of you would ask," Lucy said firmly. "But we wouldn't be Kings and Queens if we had to be asked." Though it'd be weird for someone to want to marry her instead of Su. She stuck on Ed's point though. "Peter says he came here to learn he wasn't just a King. Maybe that's what you need to learn too. I don't know what it means though."

"I don't think Aslan means for it to be easy," Edmund conceded. "Perhaps Aslan will send you here when the time is right, but if he doesn't, it's no failing on your part, Lu. Maybe you're able to learn everything you need to in Narnia. The rest of us are a little too dense and need special help."

She snickered. "Well, yeah, that's true enough," she teased. She sobered up fairly quickly. "Do you still hate it, Ed?"

Yes, she always asked that.

"I don't hate it," he said after a moment. "I have trouble understanding why I'm here. All I want is to be told what to do." Which didn't sound like Ed at all.

"That doesn't sound much like you," Lucy pointed out, looking a bit concerned. "You hate being told what to do."

"I hate being set up to fail with no idea what it is I'm supposed to succeed at more."
