A friend of mine introduced me to a guy who supplied extras for movies, tv shows, ads etc and he used to call me to tell me when there was work. It was mega fun at first, and fascinating to see how a movie is actually made but after awhile the thrill disappeared.
Most of a shoot is a great deal of sitting around and doing nothing waiting for things to be set up or actors who turn up late because they're wankers. Mind numbingly boring after the first few. The one the picture is of wasn't too bad. The actor (guy in a leather jacket) was professional, turned up on time and only had to say his lines once. I was once an extra in a song sequence (just sitting in the background, not dancing) where the actor came 3 hours late, didn't know any of the steps and took 5 takes to get anything right.
Needless to say as soon as I got a better job I immediately gave it up.
