I regard it as okay if you got a lot of people to give a home to. Like a large "family", either biologically or self-chosen. Then this also has a purpose (plain living space).
Other than that - in some point owning property also serves a little purpose for rich, but even the more for famous people: If you got your own ground, you can decide whoever may enter it. That means: People who want autographs or selfies or paparazzi, they've got to leave you alone there and not be in your face 24/7. Also, people that for some reason dislike you and like to beat the shit out of you, you've got a safe space from them. If they show up even though, you can legally call the cops and they do the rest of ridding you of these annoyances.
Especially "being famous" is a thing that doesn't have to equal "being rich", and enough people out there, meanwhile sadly, don't get it that you also have a right to privacy and that you're not their clown to entertain them all around the clock. They don't get it by themselves, so you, as the person affected, usually have got to erect barriers, so that these people can't reach you that easily and molest you. And one of those possibilities to build a barrier between them and you is: Buy a house with a piece of land of a decent size.
