Hm... This is a thing I didn't know about Japan.

But well, it makes sense in some way.
People get relatively old over there - for whatever reason -, but the overall housing situation is catastrophic ever since.
Space to live is as valuable - you better bequest it to your children and grandchildren, so they have a roof above their heads.
After Fukushima, this shouldn't have changed, rather worsened (due to some areas now uninheritable).
If you pay attention to it in mangas and animes, this should be even visible in there: Living conditions overall in Japan are that people in general have to share a relatively small space. There's not a lot of space to get for a living, unless (surely) you're rich.
Owning a house sure is only a thing that appears in the rural areas over there.
And if they live somewhere, it's also a lot of these tenement blocks with dozens of flats beside each other which already look like "here we pile up humans like boxes in a warehouse" from the outside.

Never heard it to be any different over there. This issue must be on for pretty long.
So... With that knowledge in the back of one's heads, I think it is easy to speculate a little realistically that living at all must have become so incredibly expensive in Japan during the course of years that this has become expensive everywhere in the world.
And that sure is the reason why increasingly older people tend to commit the crimes in Japan.
Living anywhere is so incredibly expensive, you struggle to maintain it financially even with several incomes.
How pensioners do that over there at all - depending on what kind of retirement system Japan has -, it will be a question anyway of how much the general prices have increased through inflation over time, so that their payments they get out of it today are like peanuts compared to these living costs.
