A Letter... answer2bheard November 24 2011, 02:36:40 UTC
It was kind of crazy, really, what Fandom's postal service would deliver. How exactly could a message in a bottle get tossed overboard from a ship in outer space, just to find itself in the post office with a stamp on it and all. But... well... this was Fandom.

Hey.

Remember me? Probably not. I mean, nothing personal or anything. It's just, if you're getting this, I'm probably not around to be remembered.

Wait, what is this crazy kid with an empty bottle going on about, right?

People have been disappearing. Which is, like, okay Jim. Sure they have. Maybe they just moved or something, Montressor's a big place full of a whole lot of nothing. People pack up and go. It's kind of a thing, right? Except I'm not on Montressor right now. These... pirates kind of came and burned down my Mom's inn, and there was this map, and look, it's a long story. I'm kind of on this ship right now, in space. I'm playing cabin boy, and we're looking for this lost treasure, and I swear I should be dead so many times by now it's kind of a wonder I'm worried about this big wall of emptiness out in space.

I'd tell you to stop laughing but you never really struck me as the type to do much of that. We have atmosphere in space here. There's always something out here. Clouds in oranges and violets. Stars. At least there should be stars. But ahead of the ship there's just... nothing. And people keep disappearing. The Captain says that the crew isn't to be trusted, but man, try telling her that one of them have just completely up and vanished, and she'll have you in the galley peeling potatoes and washing purps until your fingers are raw.

But it's true. People are going missing, and space just doesn't seem to be right at all.

Do you know what happens when a star goes supernova? It's like, all the fires of hell raining down at you, and if you're alive long enough to watch it turn around and start degenerating into a black hole again, then you know you're not going to be alive much longer, because there's no getting away from that. Whatever this is, it ate the black hole. And then nobody remembered the star was ever there at all.

The cook I've been placed under, John Silver, disappeared this morning. My mom's friend, Dr. Doppler, who came with me on this trip? He disappeared this afternoon. And there are fewer and fewer stars in the sky. I threw a purp (I guess you probably don't know what those even are, huh? They're a fruit. We see them all the time on Montressor, but anyhow...) overboard, and it just kind of... stopped.

Yeah. I know. Stopped a fruit. Funny, Jim. That doesn't even make sense.

The ship had fewer sails this morning. There was nothing at all right above us. Captain Amelia thinks it's totally normal that she's out in space with no crew besides a cabin boy.

I'm not really expecting this letter to get to anyone. I mean, I'll throw it off the other side of the ship, where there are still a few stars out there, and maybe some spacer will pick it up and deliver it to you in Fandom, or it'll get hit by an asteroid or eaten by a whale or something. But I had to say it somewhere. And maybe I'm crazy, or maybe someone will send help, or whatever. But if there's anyone out there who can help, it's someone from Fandom, I figure. Wishful thinking?

I'm Jim Hawkins, my mom's name is Sarah and she lives on Montressor. I should be going to school on Fandom Island, but my home burned down between the semesters and I didn't have the chance to go back, and I'm probably not even alive any more by the time you'll get this.

And I'm kind of scared.
