Thor noticed it first.

"Brother, what mischief is this?" He lifted his hand to inspect the coruscating light outlining his fingers. The glow seemed to emanate from Loki's come on his hands, but it continued in random pattern over his entire skin. With his clean hand, he traced a whirl over his nipple and stomach he knew Loki drew not long ago. Most worryingly, the light engulfed his cock. "I confess I do not see the point in this cantrip."

"Mmhpf?" Loki remained face-first in Thor's pillow, where he had collapsed upon release only moments prior. He didn't seem at all bothered by the glow on his body, though Thor had to tear his eyes away from the illuminated, overlapping handprints on his backside.

"Loki--"

"Thor," Loki growled, eyes still closed. "Do not spoil my afterglow. You have taken my virginity. Now, give me a few moments peace."

Thor boggled. "I thought 'afterglow' was metaphorical."

Frandal, at least, could have been good enough to give him a heads up. He got up to admire the phenomenon more closely in the mirror. His hair was shining as well, especially the loose strands around his nape where Loki had fisted his hair when Thor lowered himself to taste his brother.

"I am less displeased with it now." He lifted his jaw so that the love bite on his throat shone more brightly. Having Loki, finally, in his bed and his arms had been overwhelming. To be able to see physical proof of everywhere his brother caressed him helped bring each moment back into clarity. Thor's passion began to rouse again. Clearly, the afterglow would be fading soon, as Thor had never seen such indications on others. He wondered if they could have a second time before it did.

"Though it seems like it would be wretchedly inconvenient if you had somewhere to be afterwards. I don't see how Frandal's boasts about hallway trysts could possibly be real."

"Thor--"

"I've never seen another member of court bear these marks, so there must be some way to mute them through will or spell. Not that I plan to end them prematurely now," Thor hastened to add.

"Thor!" Loki dragged himself up. "Would you--"

Thor waited, but Loki seemed to be struck dumb. He stared at Thor, the mirror, and then down at his own hands and thighs.

"I was just enjoying the afterglow, brother. Same as you."

"You idiot, this is not afterglow. That's a metaphor. This is a curse." He seemed to come to a realization. "A curse that you passed on when you took me!"

"Loki! What a terrible thing to accuse about our first time. If this is curse, to what purpose?" Thor examined his reflection. "Making the time after sex more pleasant?"

Loki rolled his eyes and got out of bed. "I'll need my scrying glasses to figure out more details."

"Wait!" Thor intercepted his attempts to dress. "Brother, you know there is nothing malicious about this spell. Mjolnir is silent on her pedestal, and none of your wards alerted you to danger."

"That is what worries me. This spell has an unknown purpose and was powerful enough to settle on you and transfer to me without either of us noticing."

"Perhaps it is just mischief." Thor took Loki's arm. "Perhaps it is someone attempting to impress you," he teased gently and was rewarded with a small smile. "Just...stay awhile, brother. Please. Let us lay down in each other's arms and rest."

"Both of us shining like a multitude of candles?"

"Yes. You are beautiful like this, you know. I can see all the places on your body I have touched, and all the places I have been remiss in neglecting." He splayed his palm on a patch on skin still unlit. "And when I leave a mark with my mouth, it shines so bright." He sucked on Loki's collarbone, and Loki's hands came up to grasp his hair. "I could make a pattern with this. Please, Loki." Thor ducked lower to his nipple. "May I make you shine with the runes of 'beloved' over--" Another kiss. "--and over--" His hands slid down from hips to ass as Thor sank to his knees to continue the first line in the rune. "--and over again?"

"Up," Loki said hoarsely, tugging under Thor's arms. "Take me to bed."

oOo

Frigga did not concern herself when her sons missed supper, nor when they skipped breaking their fast on the morrow.  When Tyr came at noontime to say both young men had failed to attend the day's training, she began to take note, and when they were absent from supper that night as well, she sent her handmaiden to enquire about their whereabouts.

Gna informed the queen that both boys were thought to be sequestered in Loki's room.  The younger prince had sent a simulacrum to request food and drink for each meal time, and the copy had given curious instructions for the trays be left outside the door.  Neither guard nor maid had seen the actual princes since the end of training the day before.

Now worried, Frigga sought out her husband and explained their sons' strange behavior.

"Shall we make a wager on what our sons are up to?" Odin asked when she was finished.  "Do you think one of Loki's spells has gone awry, or have the boys been preparing to sneak out in search of adventure?"

"Do you really think this is time for one of your bets?  I feel they have entangled themselves in real trouble this time."

"Our children are always getting into trouble.  If I could not profit from the anticipation of it, the stress would kill me."

Frigga smacked his shoulder at the jest.  "My intuition says magic is the root of their seclusion."

Odin sighed dramatically.  "That was going to be my choice as well, since they are in Loki's room.  Thor would insist on using his chambers as their base of operations before any quest.  But, I shall always give my queen the first choice."  He kissed Frigga's hand.  "Let us see what forbidden text our son has managed to get his hands on now."

When they reached Loki's quarters, Odin held up his hand for silence before reaching out to knock.  When his hand hit the door, instead of sound, the wood rippled and reformed into a rounded face with a flat nose and closed eyes.  The construct's mouth opened, but it was her sons' voices that carried out.

"How much longer until you fix our quandary?"  Thor complained, his voice strangely flat and subdued coming from the door.  "Tyr will certainly not accept more evasions if I miss training tomorrow."

"I realize that with most of your problems, you simply hit until it dies, but the answer to this will be in a book that I haven't read yet, which means I don't know."

There was a silence, and Frigga frowned to hear such discord between her children.

"Forgive me.  It...frustrates me that I cannot help you at all in this.  I know I have ruined our first--"

"No, Thor."  Frigga rarely heard Loki sound so tender.  "You ruined nothing.  I do not regret it."  There was a pause.  "Do you?"

"No!  Loki, I will never regret last night--or any of it!  I want you by my side for all our future days."

Loki laughed softly.  "Peace.  Peace.  If I cannot find a way to unravel this quite yet, and that is looking likely without knowledge of the original curse cast, I will find a glamour strong enough to cover it for your training tomorrow, I swear."

There was a sound she could not understand, but Frigga was already turning to her husband.  Her sons both cursed!  Why had they not come for help?  Odin looked as perplexed as she felt.

"I have seen you pull apart powerful traps of magic through sheer force of will.  I find it as amusing as I do vexing that something this simple is confounding you."

"It is not the shape of the spell, it is the power behind it.  You haven't angered Father or Amora lately, have you?"

"Well, my dear?" Odin asked.  "Any more specific guesses on what our sons have gotten themselves embroiled in?"

"Our sons have been cursed.  I am not in a gaming mood."

Odin flattened the face back into the door with his hand and kept pressing.  Loki's wards sighed, but no lock could hold against the Allfather in his own home.  They both heard Thor slam up against the door on the other side to physically block them.  Bright light spilled through the crack between doors, as if the source was directly on the other side.

"Thor, it is your parents.  We would speak with you now."

"Mother, I beg your indulgence, but neither Loki nor I can receive audience at this moment.  He is working on a very difficult spell, and I am aiding him.  We would be happy to speak with you on the morrow."  There was a hissed response from Loki.  "Or, the day after that," Thor amended.

"We will speak to you now," Odin said with the fiat of Hlidskjalf behind him.  When he set his shoulder against the door and stepped forward, there was no force in all Asgard that could stop him.

Frigga first looked to her sons to see if they were all right, and nearly could not recognize them for all the blinding brightness that radiated from every part of their bodies.

"What is..." Her astonishment faded as she identified the spell.  She had laughed two years ago as Odin had placed it on her oblivious firstborn child.  She found a chair to sit down in.

"Father--"  Loki, always one for shadows, looked even odder than Thor, every part of him glowing and a collar of even brighter marks around his neck.  Frigga wished she did not know what that meant.  "--we apologize for not coming to you sooner.  I did not wish to disturb you with a problem if I could solve it myself, but this blasted light makes it hard to read."

"Perhaps than you should have stopped before it got to be so."

Loki froze.  "What?"

Odin turned on his other son.  "With a spell as obviously difficult to remove as this, it is important to know what might have triggered it.  Thor, what were you doing just before you noticed the light appeared?"

Thor startled.  "Before?  We were--training."

"Really?  No one in the Great Hall at dinner mentioned such a strange sight."

"We...had already finished training.  We were coming back to our rooms to prepare for dinner."

"Ah, so to be more precise, what happened two minutes before the light appeared?"

Thor looked to Loki, and then back at his parents.  "It is difficult to remember so exactly."

"Really?  I would think the moment you started glowing would stand out in an otherwise normal day."

"Yes, well--"

"There's no point in prevaricating, Thor," Loki cut in.  "They already know, don't you?  Is this some kind of anti-incest spell?"

"Loki!" Thor looked shocked.  "Have a little delicacy.  These are our parents."

"Our parents put an anti-incest spell on you, Thor.  I think we're past that."

"It is not a--" Odin winced.  "--spell to reveal incest.  It was merely to let us know when Thor first had sex."

"Father!  Mother!  Why?"

"It was a bet between your father and I, dear," Frigga explained.  "On who would take your virginity: Sif or a foreign princess."

Loki gave a croaking laugh.  "I spoiled all your hopes then."

"Do not talk about yourself that way," Thor ordered.  He moved to Loki's side and went to take him in his arms before remembering their parents' presence.  He hovered, one arm curved around Loki's back but not touching.

Odin sighed. "Let us talk plainly."  He brought Gungnir down hard against the floor, and the light vanished from Thor and Loki's bodies.  "Why have my sons ended up in bed together?"

Loki sank down into his desk's chair, but Thor stood taller at the question.  "That should be obvious.  Because we are in love."

Frigga covered her mouth with her hand.  "You were always close as boys, and distant from your age-mates because of your position.  Could this not just be familiarity?"

"No, Mother.  It is love."  There was the same firmness in Thor's expression that she saw in her husband when he spoke a truth into the world.

"How can you know that?" She rose from her seat.  "You are both still boys, untested in matters of the heart.  How can you know you if these feelings are true or misguided affection if you have never experienced them with others?"

"When I first made an orchid bloom in my hands with seiðr, I had never heard of such a flower before.  But I knew what it was as soon as I held the seed."  Loki's gaze flickered between his parents.

"You were raised as brothers," Frigga said helplessly.

Loki's gaze snapped hers.  "That implies we are not actually brothers."

"It matters not."  Thor's hand came down on Loki's shoulder.  "Loki is my brother and my lover.  When I am king, he will be king with me.  I will accept every consequence of this choice, every difficulty, every sorrow, because the one future I will not yield to is the one where Loki is not at my side."

Loki looked up at Thor in unguarded amazement before raising a hand to twine his fingers amongst Thor's on his shoulder.  Thor raised Loki's hand and kissed the heel of his palm, as they had seen Odin do for Frigga a thousand times uncounted.

When Frigga looked at Odin, she saw the same understanding: this was more than the lusts of adolescence and the convenience of a trusted companion.

"There is much that still needs to be discussed," Odin said.  "But it is late, and we are all wearied.  May we rest and reconvene tomorrow afternoon when we will all be better prepared for such conversation."

Loki and Thor stood and bowed their parents out.  There was a moment of disorientation when Frigga realized Thor was staying, and then she turned back to kiss both sons on their cheeks.

"You are loved," she whispered in their ears.  "Never doubt that."  She wished them a good night and took her husband's arm to return to their chambers.

"That is a bet we have both lost," Odin finally said in the privacy of their rooms.

"What?" Frigga slid into bed besides him.

"Who our son would lay with first.  We both chose incorrectly."

"My dear husband, how have I lost?  Loki is a foreign jötunn, both born and raised in royalty, and all know the jötunn share both genders."  She leaned in for a kiss.  "I have, in fact, won doubly tonight."

She laughed as Odin pulled her down into their bed.
