Detroit Tigers radio announce Ernie Harwell died yesterday of bile duct cancer. He was one of the most legendary voices in all of baseball and a Hall-of-Famer. I listened to him from 2000-2002 while I was at Bowling Green. BG is in northwest Ohio and about an hour from Detroit, so I could get his broadcasts. He retired after the 2002 season. In all, he called 42 years of Tiger baseball. Ernie is beloved here in Michigan. I, too, and very saddened that he, like is homerun call, is "looooooooooong gone."
Yesterday was a horrible day in Detroit sports. Not only did Ernie Harwell die, but the Tigers and Red Wings both lost and both blew leads. The Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins in the bottom of the 9th when a pitch got past the catcher and the winning run scored from third base. They had a 3-2 lead, but gave up the tying homerun in the 8th The Red Wings blew a 3-1 lead in the third period and lost to the San Jose Sharks in overtime. The Sharks are now up 3-0 in the second round playoff series. Kathy and I are going to game 4 on Thursday. I hope that they don't get eliminated or this would be a truly horrible week for Detroit sports. R.I.P. Ernie.
