I just remembered something funny that happened over the summer:
Dan was coming to LA for a week after being in Japan and we were going to both stay with my parents. The week before he came I kept telling my parents how I was going to the Crystal Method show on Friday with him when he came and how excited I was. Well, my parents don't speak English perfectly (although we talk 50% in English at home), my father is absent-minded and my mother is ADHD, and I talk too much, so they didn't pay careful attention to my ramblings. Then finally on the day before the show, I was like, "I'm so excited to see Crystal Method," and my dad says something like, "be careful, yeah?" which I question him on, and it turns out the entire week he assumed I had been saying I was going to do crystal meth with dan on Friday (which was definitely not the case)! and yet he continued to gaze absent-mindedly and not care. furthermore, hes actually done it in the past (accidentally; i'll leave the long story of how a 50year old man accidentally does meth for some other time) and thinks it's a wild, out-of-control drug, compared to others... wtf. it was bizarre and oh-so-typical. these are the same people that slave-drove me to study all through school, never accepted a B as an answer (my mother, totally deadpan: "oh, you got 98% on the calculus test? what did you get wrong? did you not study?"), and insisted I go to one art gallery per week and write a page-long report about each one all though the first two years of high school. weird bohemian crazies. they make me proud.
