She was going to get her ass kicked, but she didn’t care. She wasn’t sure if Sassy was aware, but Hank didn’t much care about that, either. She had enough presence of mind to text Bee and Uncle Drew before taking off, but she wasn’t sure that was going to matter.
Sassy got them to Vegas in about half an hour.
Now they stood in front of the Bellagio, watching the water settle after the fountain show that had just taken place. It was just about dark, so the lights were all coming on. It was beautiful, breathtaking even.
Hank just stared at the water and felt like killing Ruby all over again.
It was a stupid procedure. Reattach a ligament, sew up some muscle, whatever was involved in repairing the torn tendons in Dad’s shoulder. It was simple shit, and Dad would be home again in no time, bitching about his rehab.
That’s what he told her, anyway, and she wasn’t buying a word of it.
Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a penny and stared at it for a moment, wondering if it would work. No, that was the right answer, the obvious answer. It didn’t help to wish, and it was stupid to be this scared over a goddamn orthopedic procedure.
Sure…and Mom’s stomachache really had been nothing. The rest was all in Hank’s head.
“Sooooo, you gonna tell me yet what we’re doing here, Rex?”
Staring at the penny a little while longer, she finally closed her fist around it and shut her eyes. Hell, it didn’t hurt, right?
I wish for my dad to be okay.
Drawing back, she flung the coin into the water as hard and as far as she could, watching as it broke the now still, glassy surface with a satisfying little ‘plop’ and a circular ripple to show where it had landed.
“Nope.” she replied tersely, sinking to sit cross-legged and stare at the water through the ironwork railing bordering the lake. “I just wanna sit here for a while.”
For a long while there was silence…then arms around Hank’s shoulders from behind.
“Sass…”
“Shut it, Rexy. Tommy lets me do it.”
“I’m not Tommy.”
“No, you I wouldn’t do. Well…maybe if I was gay. Shut up, Dino Girl. He’d hug you if he were here, but he’s not so I am. So deal with it, best friend huggy time.”
Hank just rolled her eyes…but didn’t move away as they sat there until the next fountain show began.
