[continued from
this thread which broke the layout]
Jen untangles herself from Gibbs and stands up. She can feel him close behind her as they head down to her finished basement. Something changed when she brought up Shannon and it broke the dam. After that, everything came out and they finally got to the bottom of their problems. And they both found their way to a place where neither wants the other to leave. Not just beyond the end of the day, but in a small number of years when she catches up with Lou Gehrig.
She takes the stairs slowly, but down is always easier than up for her as long as she's paying attention to where she steps. Her basement isn't large; being a townhouse, most of the square footage is vertical. But there's enough room for an old pool table, one that belonged to her father. He used to have his Army buddies over and they'd come downstairs, smoke cigars, drink expensive liquor, play pool instead of poker. It's been nine years since they played and even longer since this table got any use.
The table cover comes off and she folds it up haphazardly, just to get it out of the way. "I think we should make a wager," she says as she opens the cabinet where the cues and balls are kept. She turns over her shoulder and just looks at him. For a moment, she gets lost in her head. After the morning they had, she's painfully aware of how much she missed him over the last nine years, even if he was within reach for the last three. It's too late for real relationships now. But as she stands there looking at him, she realizes what she really wants with the men in her life.
