Pain has a way of consuming a person. It can drive you to dark places and to do unspeakable things. It can fuel the fires of vengeance and burn all the way through rationality. They can mask it and give it other names, but when the only thing between you and him is the barrel of a gun, all it comes down to is that original pain. It becomes all you know and when it's finally gone, you're not the same woman you used to be. You crossed that line once. Crossing it again will be easy.
So as you stare out the window of his dark hospital room with only his even breathing for company, you come to one conclusion. The only way this can end can only be badly, but is it worth it to perpetuate the cycle? The evidence isn't there and you're not like him. But you don't have another ten years to waste trying to do it the right way. You'll do it your way.
