what i wrote instead of my art history essays, by melanie bernal.

here's my ideal ringing in of the new years this year:

i'm playing connect four with somebody in a cemetary where there's a party going on. we're kind of off in the distance, just shaded by overhanging pine trees, and sitting behind a row of gravestones, but we can still hear the roar of drunken auld lang syne being sung out to the marina as we steadily fill the board with black and red. a hushed murmer overcomes the new years singers, and eventually works up to an explosive countdown. there are five seconds until the new year

5!
i drop my red chip in between your two black ones on either side, stopping you from getting a connect four
4!
you curse and search the board for another way to score, but the shouting crowd of numbers is distracting you. while the sense of duty at the board grips you into place, you can't take your eyes off of them, always glancing over as if you're about to spring up and join them
3!
i sneak in another red chip while you're looking away, leaving only one slot open for my deffinite win. i pray that you won't notice
2!
you look back to the board and drop your chip in wherever, it seems hopeless, as the seconds of the year drip away, and you leave my spot completely open...
i reach out to drop in my red chip for the kill ....and
1!
CONNECT FOURRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pots and pans bang with triumph, the celebration of fireworks go off. i keep saying your name and "connect four! look!" but you won't look up, you hate that you dropped the ball as the ball dropped, but i start high fiving you because its so glorious, there are tears in both of our eyes, and suddenly we don't know which emotion is which and we're making out on top of somebody's grave,

later, i barbecue an organic pterodactyl wing for everyone, and we all sit around singing and talking to one another, thinking about what a great year it's going to be. my my the town will be rocking on new years morn.
