I really wanted to go to this year's WriterCon (and not just because I've never been to Atlanta), but now I'm torn. On the one hand, it's a weekend all about the fen, and fic in particular. And Cons in general are fun.
On the other hand, I'd have to convince P to take at least one extra class for me. And it's expensive (but not nearly as much as the various academic conferences I've been to this year).
But the dealbreaker is probably that, even though I know they're trying to expand the fandoms and get new people in, it's still a very Joss-centered event. Lots of Buffy, some Firefly, and everything else is marginal. I've taken a look at the existing fic archive, and almost without exception it's Buffy-centric.
*whispers quietly*
I don't like Buffy. Not my thing. Leaves me cold. Don't know why, but I'm just not interested.
Ahem. Right, so obviously if I go I'd have to pretend to like Whedon's Worlds more than I do, and that's sounds awfully tiring. Sure, I like Firefly, and I've been known to read a Buffy-West Wing crossover (Donna the Vampire Slayer, of course), but overall, I don't have the inclination to really learn about the fandom between now and July.
I wouldn't call myself a fan of either of them. Not the way I'm a fan of several other things. Not to the point that I'd be able to sit through a panel session without squirming.
Maybe I'll hold off and save up for the next DW Con. Isn't there one in Chicago? If that was a bust, at least I'd be able to keep myself entertained.
But then again, I'm really a New fan, and I have a hard time not laughing about the old eps. So maybe not.
Dammit, I miss LFN. Somebody needs to plan another Close Quarters Standby, because this time I'd be able to go. Or a Numb3rs Con. Other than the meetup in LA, which is obviously out of the question.
