Tonight I stopped in at the grocery to see if they had any paczki, because tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday ALREADY.
They had them last month, I swear they did, but tonight the following happened:
a) I checked the bakery. Nothing.
b) I asked at customer service. The lady blinked at me, asked me to repeat myself, and then asked me to spell paczki.
c) I did, and she blinked at me again, and asked if I was sure. Because there was no "u" in it. Which, no. There isn't.
d) She then asked me what they were in English, presumably because my Polish accent is Just That Bad. Fair enough.
e) I answered that they were fastnacht.
f) Again with the blinking. Because you know what? Fastnacht is ALSO NOT ENGLISH. I don't have the English word for them. Is there an English word that means paczki or fastnacht or semla? Because apparently I know what I'm talking about in THREE languages, and none of them do me any good.
g) I bought a couple of filled croissants, but it's just not the same. I guess tomorrow I'll just have to have pancakes instead.
h) When I called my mom and told her about this, she laughed at me. And then she told my father, so that he could laugh at me.
i) And then she mentioned that at her grocery, they have four flavors with filling and two without and that maybe she could mail me some.
Of course, they'd get here on Thursday and then I wouldn't be able to EAT them. So, no. Not so much with the helpful, my mother.
