I milked a cow!

I went to the agricultural field day held as part of the fall fair today. There were typical thing like a corn maze, craft demonstrations (I saw demonstrations of basket weaving, spinning and loom weaving) and a petting zoo.

There were pigs for sale at the petting zoo ($40.00 each). I’ve just finished reading Farm City, in which the author raised pigs in her urban farm. She said raising pigs was the pinnacle of her farming experience and was really excited about all the meat products she made from her pigs. Seeing the pigs for sale made me think of the book, but I was not tempted! I was surprised at how many people were tempted and how many of them were thinking of the pigs as pets. They weren't minature pigs, but Full Sized Pigs! Not suitable for living rooms.

We had home made ice cream, made in a hand cranked ice cream maker. Then they announced that there was going to be a cow milking demonstration. After they talked a little about keep cow teats healthy, they asked if anyone wanted to try hand milking. Of course I did!

Here I’m learning how:

And here I successfully managed a milk squirt.

As a bonus: Isn’t this duck cute.

I took her picture when we took the students out to watch ducks at the waterfowl park. The lab started at 6 am, since ducks are most active at dusk and dawn. This is not so true of students. My job was to watch students watch ducks. Fun!
