So waiting is uncomfortable...
At the interview they said they would let people know this week. I think they even said early this week- so it’s the end of Tuesday and there hasn’t been a peep.
I’ve been trying to visualize happy thoughts, of me getting the job but I also keep trying to be prepared for what I will say if they turn me down. I’d like to be gracious- although that is not what I’ll be feeling.
In the meantime I went to see the tall ships leave the harbour with a friend. The ships were pretty much in the middle of the harbour, so the pictures are only ok.
We were a bit late getting to the park, so this is the first few ships that we saw.
I like this photo, since it shows at least three different sizes of tall ships.
McNabbs is almost at the mouth of Halifax Harbour, and some of the ships were leaving on a race, and some were just leaving. The first picture below is the Eagle and the second ship is the Caledonia with McNabbs island behind them.
The Eagle is the US Coast Guard training ship. Here is a better picture of her.
Both Portugal and Brazil also had Navy training ships in. Here is the Sagres from Portugal.
And the Cisne Branco from Brazil. This ship was built in 2000. I kind of like that there are still people who build large ships. It is not a wooden ship, which is to bad, instead it's a retofit metal hull.
A number of ships didn't have their sail up, which was to bad, it being the parade of sails and all. However, I supose it was due to safety concerns and since I wouldn't want to watch any sort of tragedy, I'm OK with them motoring.
Here is the parade closer, the Kruzenshtern from Russia.
This is a French ship, but it doesn't match any of the ships on the Tall ships 2009 website.
There were a couple of schooners. I'm not sure if all schooners once fished, or if they had other uses as well, such as local trading, which would make sence.
Pride of Baltimore II
Schooner Virginia
We looked at the Schooner Virginia at the wharf and they had an interesting sign on the rigging. It said that she work to promote the economic prosperity of the commonwealth. We questioned one of the crew, who said that Virginia is not a state but a commonwealth, but he didn’t know what that meant. Turns out Pennsylvania is also a commonwealth. I take it, it’s a way to organize government but I don’t really get what the difference is. Any thoughts?
Lastly here is the Bounty (Well technically the Bounty II)
I love the Bounty. She has this very stern looking figurehead. I took this picture last time she was in.
Apparently, the Bounty was one of the ships used in Pirates of the Caribbean, but our superficial looking on the internet did not turn up which ship she was playing in that movie. She was built for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty, and so between decks at an ideal height for movies.
Also Bligh didn’t seem any worse than any of the other ships captains of the time (that doesn’t excuse him, as the history is brutal), but he did get the men that were put off with him, home- just under 4000 nautical miles- using a pocket watch and sextant, which is pretty impressive.
I didn't go down to the wharf with friends who had children, which is to bad, since look at this awsome bouncy slide.
OK, now back to waiting.
