Narsha hopes for Brown Eyed Girls' comeback, excited for 20th anniversary

Singer and TV personality Narsha says Brown Eyed Girls remain an inseparable part of her life. The group, which debuted in 2006, is now celebrating its 19th anniversary, having dominated the early 2000s with hits like "How Come," "Abracadabra," "My Style," "Hold the Line," "Sign" and "Sixth Sense."

In an exclusive interview with The Hankook Ilbo, Narsha described the group as the "backbone" of her career. "I can't imagine what my career would have been like without Brown Eyed Girls. They are an essential part of my journey," she said.

"We've been together for over 19 years, and that in itself is something to be proud of. Sometimes we have a love-hate relationship, but above all, we cherish our team. No matter what, I always remind myself to never do anything that would embarrass the group's name."

‘Sorry for the long hiatus’

Brown Eyed Girls last released a remake album in 2019, marking a six-year gap in their full group activities. Despite this, their songs remain beloved by fans, fueling anticipation for a comeback. While the group sparked rumors of a reunion last year with a surprise live broadcast and an end-of-year gathering, no comeback plans were confirmed in 2024.

Addressing these expectations, Narsha said, "If I were told to record tomorrow, I'd be ready in an instant."

She added, "Although we've been on hiatus, I always maintain my routine so that I’m prepared for a comeback anytime. However, it's not just about wanting it - we need all four members on board, as well as alignment with producers, which takes time. We do meet up occasionally, but honestly, we mostly just hang out and catch up. That’s probably why we’ve lasted this long. But I feel so sorry for the fans who have been waiting. If the right song comes along, I would love to make a comeback."

With the group's 20th anniversary approaching next year, discussions about a commemorative reunion are gaining traction. While no official plans are in place, Narsha expressed her hopes for a return.

"Our leader JeA briefly mentioned the 20th anniversary on the radio, and I feel the same way. I really hope we can celebrate it with a comeback," she said. "I recently saw 2NE1 reunite as a full group, and it was amazing. Seeing old friends return to the stage together reminded me how powerful reunions can be. I hope we can do the same next year."

‘Nineteen years in the industry still doesn't feel real’

Reflecting on her 19-year career, Narsha admitted, "It doesn't feel real that it's been 19 years."

"When I first started, my only goal was passing auditions. Now, I realize I’ve been in the industry so long that it's hard to find people with more experience than me. Everywhere I go, people treat me with respect, and I don’t even know how to respond sometimes," she said with a laugh.

"I just want to keep doing what I do with responsibility and integrity. Seeing veteran artists still going strong makes me believe I can have a long career, too. As long as I take care of myself and stay ready, I think I can keep going for much longer than I expected. I don’t know when it will end, but I plan to keep performing as long as I can.”

Narsha emphasized the importance of staying prepared and shared her aspirations for this year.

"This year, I want to keep learning and challenging myself. If a great opportunity arises, I won’t hesitate to audition. Just like in my early days, I love staying up late preparing and practicing - it’s been so long since I felt this excitement. I hope to take on new challenges and keep this feeling alive. Who knows? Great opportunities might come my way."
