Court accepts MBC's property seizure request against 'Jeongnyeoni' production companies

A dispute has unfolded between the production companies of the TV series "Jeongnyeoni: The Star is Born" and MBC regarding a property seizure request filed by the broadcaster.

The production companies - Studio N, Management mmm and NPO Entertainment - released an official statement Thursday, countering MBC's property seizure request.

They said that the show was developed and planned without any financial support from MBC.

The production companies said that MBC delayed negotiations over production costs, saying, "MBC created a situation where we were forced to accept their unreasonable conditions. Ultimately, the production companies never reached an agreement with MBC on production costs."

They said that 20 days before filming was set to begin, MBC told them to find another channel if they could. "This resulted in the production being delayed by more than a month while we moved to another platform," they said in the statement.

The companies argued that MBC's recent legal action, taken just before the drama's broadcast, was "intended to maliciously tarnish the project's reputation."

Regarding the court's acceptance of MBC's seizure request, they said, "It is not a final judgment by the court but merely a provisional measure based on MBC's one-sided claims, without an opportunity for the production companies to present their case."

They said that "the seizure decision is unrelated to the broadcast itself and does not affect the broadcast schedule." The drama is scheduled to air on tvN starting from Oct. 12.

"Jeongnyeoni" is a drama set in the 1950s, following the fierce competition, camaraderie, and dazzling growth of Jeongnyeoni, a naturally gifted vocal talent aspiring to become the greatest gukgeuk (traditional Korean opera) actress after the Korean War. The cast includes Kim Tae-ri, Shin Ye-eun and Ra Mi-ran.

Conflict deepens

An MBC official said, "Regarding 'Jeongnyeoni,' we filed a property seizure request against the production companies due to the misappropriation of business achievements and losses for the unfair termination of contract negotiations.

The court found merit in all of our claims and fully granted the seizure request."

According to industry sources, MBC participated in the pre-production process of "Jeongnyeoni," including research and casting, but suffered losses when the show was not scheduled for broadcast. MBC also cited director Jeong Ji-in's resignation from the broadcaster as part of their workforce loss.

However, the production companies said, "The claim of a massive exodus of staff from MBC is not true. In fact, no one besides the director has left MBC. The director's decision to resign was voluntary and made to ensure the quality of the project."

"Jeongnyeoni," which was initially in talks with MBC for broadcasting, appears to have chosen tvN due to issues related to production costs, leading to a breakdown in negotiations.

A Seoul court accepted MBC's property seizure request against the production companies Tuesday.
