wait i'm so confused? so this is actually some girl's body, but they overlay it?? and whose voice is this? i thought naevis is aespa's ai thing lol. sm please stop.
Yeah I thought it was supposed to be fully artificial too but they keep using real people for these ai idols! I don't know whose voice it is but the dance bits with the other girls they definitely used a real person's body. The part where she's the most "realistic" they sometimes switch the motion capture animated body out with a real one and just put a smoothing filter over it and edit naevis' face on top of her. When the same avatar is just walking she's a bit stiff, her clothes look quite flat and the lighting doesn't match the surroundings but when she's dancing the folds, the shadows etc are all hyperreal - you can tell at the end when they show her hands that they have lines and stuff in the palms which is a level of detail they 100% did not put in with her other avatars which is why they look so flat, that is a PERSON!
Aespa's virtual counterparts are called "ae". Naevis is a different character in their lore who is a friend to aespa and the aes. In the lore she is a fully virtual being but they are trying to bring her into the real world(?) ("Naevis on the real my world....." *synth dance break*)
The term "AI" has become extremely muddled due to its use as a marketing buzzword, but according to the lore Naevis is an AI as in artificial intelligence - a virtual being that is similar to a human. It has nothing to do with "AI" as in machine learning (chatGPT, AI-generated images etc.) I believe they are using CGI + real vocalists/dancers because machine learning still produces "uncanny valley" results.
They really made a mess of the whole concept like they did with the EXO superpowers thing, wasn't it initially created so that they could use the ae to interact with fans and create a standalone group that could be controlled either by AI or other staff and applied to stuff completely separate from the girls? I remember when they just debuted people were talking about there being a weird undertone to them being "older" than usual because they thought it was so that SM didn't have to worry as much about people doing inappropriate things with their digital counterparts.
I remember SM talking about all that stuff when aespa debuted yeah. I knew it wouldn't pan out and I'm glad. Technology like that is still a long way away, the stuff that's being marketed as "AI" right now could never be a satisfactory substitute for real human interaction.
But i do miss aespa leaning into the fun cyber warrior concept. The aes were stupid but the rest of the concept was fun.
Stop being cowards and using real life women's bodies to put digital idol heads on top of. Commit to the bit and make it all look dated and bad!
