Flashback Friday
Happy Friday! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week we are going back 6 years to the 1st week in March, 2018. The top three songs are bops, so we’ll slow it down with the honorable mentions.
#3 Red Velvet “Bad Boy”
This was the lead single from the group’s album reissue, “The Perfect Red Velvet”. I love this shit so much lol. It’s my favorite song from the group! I’m not the only one. The song would win a handful of music show trophies and be nominated for a bunch of year end awards. It would be included on many “Best K-pop” lists, including the top spot on Billboard’s Best K-Pop song of 2018. It is one of the group’s best selling songs, and would debut and peak at #2 on the charts.
#2 iKON “Love Scenario”
This damn ear worm, and the group’s signature song. This was a MONSTER hit. The first song to achieve Gaon platinum status (it would go on to become double platinum), the first top the Gaon charts for 6 straight weeks, and to no surprise ending the year as Gaon’s #1 song. It would top both Melon and Genie’s charts for over a month as well. It would win 11 music show trophies, and many year end awards including multiple daesangs. It would also be banned from elementary schools because the kids kept singing it lol cute. The melody is too catchy!
#1 Momoland “Bboom Bboom”
Another signature song! This Shinsadong Tiger track was the lead single from the group’s EP “Great!”. The song would debut at #48 on the charts in January, and the song would rise up until capturing the top spot in March. This song would give them their very first music show win, followed by six more. I haven’t thought of this song in forever! And then everything came back to me. Remember JooE was everywhere after this?!? The girls were busy! And The Dab! Do the kids still do The Dab? Probably not.
Honorable Mentions
#6 Jung Seung Hwan “The Snowman”
This was one of the singles from his album, “Spring Again”. He and the song would be nominated for a bunch of year end awards. It’s a very pretty song about seasons changing with the person you loved. The song and the album and the MV all tie in together, I love it when that happens! A pretty song deserves a pretty video. I only go up to see the snow every few years, so it’s all very romantic to me lol.
#8 MeloMance “Gift”
This song was released in July of 2017, and did not do too well. It would fall to the 148th place on the charts. After performing the song on Sketchbook in September, their performance went viral (because apparently people were shocked at the talent), and the song would shoot up to the top spot. It continued to remain in the top ten well into the new year. It would be the duo’s first song to break into the top ten on the charts.
