Male vocalists will go head-to-head with one another in an upcoming competition show, "Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survival," to join a new vocal-centric boy group.
"Build Up" is the newest addition to a long list of survival audition programs launched by cable channel Mnet, which intends to create a male quartet that will be active for two years. It will feature 40 participants, encompassing K-pop stars, musical actors, and idol trainees. Notable contestants include the former DAY6 member Im Jun-hyeok, Jeonwoong of AB6IX, Lee Dong-hoon of A.C.E, WEi's Kang Seok-hwa, and JUST B's BAIN.
Hosted by actor Lee Da-hee, "Build Up" will invite Seo Eun-kwang of BTOB, solo artist Kim Jae-hwan, Solar of MAMAMOO, Wendy of Red Velvet, Baekho and Lee Seok-hoon as judges.
"The contestants never failed to amaze me every time," actor Lee said during a press conference at CJ ENM headquarters in Mapo District, western Seoul, Wednesday. "I was naturally immersed in the sheer talents I encountered. I couldn't help but think, 'Where have all these gems been hiding?'"
Seo Eun-kwang revealed that he earned a new nickname Viper for his sharpness in judging.
"Judging those in the same field made me more sensitive and meticulous," Seo, a renowned vocalist, said. "As I still take vocal lessons, I try to judge the participants as strictly as I do with myself."
For the first time in her career, Red Velvet's Wendy will appear as a judge for an audition program.
"My focus was on evaluating each member's charm as well as the team's overall harmony," she noted.
This is also the first time that Baekho, Solar and Kim Jae-hwan have assumed the role of judges. For Baekho and Kim - the contestants of the second season of Mnet's audition show, "Produce 101" (2017) - the newly assigned role holds a special significance.
"As someone who also comes from an audition program, I could understand the participants' desperate emotions very well," Kim said. "So I'm making an effort to judge strictly and warmly at the same time."
Helmed by producer Ma Doo-sik, best known for his role on the talent search show, "Super Star K," the upcoming program will seek to differentiate itself with its vocal-centric approach.
"Many survival programs or audition shows have been putting emphasis on performances," Ma stressed. "But 'Build Up' is different as we focus 100 percent on the vocal abilities of our contenders."
"Build Up: Vocal Boy Group Survival" is scheduled to premiere on Friday.
