YG keeps mum over ongoing controversy

K-pop boy band TREASURE has ignited controversy for using a map that omitted Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo ― an area of territorial dispute between Korea and Japan.

The 10-piece act unveiled the controversial map during a fan event at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Sunday, to show the cities where it will play concerts in 2024 as part of its Japan tour “Reboot.” The map featured the dates and venues for its upcoming shows, but did not include the image of Dokdo. It depicted other territories of Korea such as the southern scenic island of Jeju and Ulleung Island near Dokdo, but the rocky islets in the East Sea was not visible.

Korea has long retained control of Dokdo, stationing permanent security personnel on the islets since 1954. Japan, however, has been claiming sovereignty over Dokdo, insisting that it acquired the islands as a terra nullius in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War. This territorial dispute has been one of the most sensitive ongoing points of contention between Seoul and Tokyo.

Hence, the map in question infuriated numerous online users in Korea.

“This is clearly an unpatriotic act,” an internet user commented.

Another wrote, “TREASURE is turning a blind eye to our history and territories because it is so eager to make money in the lucrative Japanese market.”

Seo Kyung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University and an active promoter of Korea as a cultural power, also criticized the K-pop stars for “providing a reason” for Japan to continue its claim.

“The group’s management company, YG Entertainment, should take extra care in the future to prevent the recurrence of an incident like this,” Seo said on Instagram, Tuesday.

YG Entertainment has not commented on the issue.

TREASURE burst onto the K-pop scene in 2020 with the album, “The First Step: Chapter One.” It is composed of seven Korean members ― Choi Hyun-suk, Jihoon, Junkyu, Yoon Jae-hyuk, Doyoung, Park Jeong-woo and So Jung-hwan ― and three Japanese members ― Yoshi, Haruto and Asahi.
