Flashback Friday

Jul 28, 2023 12:23

Happy Friday! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 4th week in July, 2014.

#3 Taeyang “Eyes, Nose, Lips”
This was one of the lead singles from his second full album, “Rise”. It’s not my favorite song from the album, but I get why it was such a big hit. It peaked at the top spot, and is his best selling solo single. The song would win 8 music show trophies, top multiple best of the year lists, and win almost every end of the year awards (including 4 different Song Of The Year awards). It would end up as Gaon’s second best charting song of 2014. Here’s a stage from M Countdown. I cannot believe it’s been 9 years since this era, and now he and Hyorin are married with a family.

#2 AOA “Short Hair”
This was the lead single from the group’s EP of the same name. Both the album and the song would peak in the top five on the charts. It was the follow up to “Miniskirt”. God, 2014 was such a good year for AOA! And this is my favorite song from them! The “oh oh oh ohhh” part in the verses always get to me lol. Here’s a stage from M Countdown. Like, I know these outfits are supposed to be flight attendant outfits, but I would totally wear the whole getup lol. Cute!

#1 f(x) “Red Light”
Like, this isn’t my favorite song from the group, but something about it makes me feral lol. This era was sooo good! Both the song and the album would peak at the top spot, and it would win a trophy at every music show award. This was Sulli’s last release with the group. She started sitting out promotions due to health reasons two weeks after the song’s release, and would announce her hiatus from the group a week after that. Here’s a stage from Music Core, one of their last stages as a 5 member group.

Honorable Mentions

#9 Younha “Umbrella”
This was a solo remake of the song that she did with Epik High in 2008. They are frequent collaborators, and feature on each other's songs. This would be Younha’s first #1 song on the charts. Because of the song’s success, the original song found its way back onto the charts as well. A win for everyone!

#10 IU “Meaning of You”
The was a song from her “Flower Bookmark” album, which consisted of cover songs. The original was a 1984 song from the band Sanulrim. This was the biggest hit off of her album, outselling every other song as her best selling song for the year. On a personal note, she would sing this song at Lee Jong Suk’s brother’s wedding. They would announce their relationship months later. Here’s a performance of the song from her “Dlwlrma” concert in 2018.
