Flashback Friday

Jul 07, 2023 13:56

Happy Friday! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to the 1st week in July, 2012. I only have foggy memories of this week, maybe you remember more.

#3 2NE1 “I Love You”
In a year filled with overseas activities, this was the group’s only Korean release in 2012. This was a non-album release, sandwiched in between Japanese promotions and the group’s first world tour. The song would peak at the top spot on the Korean charts, and in the top five in Japan, when a Japanese version was released a few months later. I liked this era, they all looked so expensive lol! Here’s a live performance video with guitarist Jung Sungha. They did a couple of these acoustic videos together.

#2 T-ara “Day By Day”
This was the group’s follow up to “Lovey Dovey”, and the first to feature brand new maknae, Areum. It would also be the last release with Hwayoung. Yes, this was the era when it all went down. I barely remember this song, but I do remember all the mess. It all happened so fast! Like, less than a week and she was gone. Here’s one of the last performances of the group as eight members on Beautiful Concert. It wasn’t broadcasted until a month later, and made some news because they didn’t edit out Hwayoung. It has over 45 million views now.

#1 Sistar “Loving U”
Summer Queens are back again! This was the title track of their summer EP of the same name. It was the follow up to “Alone”, and would follow similar success. It peaked at the top spot on the charts, and is one of their biggest selling singles. I think I sometimes get this era confused with the “I Swear” era. Too many Sistar summer jams lol. Here’s a stage at Music Core.

Honorable Mentions

#6 Super Junior “Sexy, Free & Single”
This was the lead single from the group’s sixth full album of the same name. Both the single and the album would win tons of awards, both in Korea and overseas. I didn’t remember this song at the title, but playing it I guess it sounds familiar. But only just a little. But then again I wasn’t really checking in on Super Junior I guess lol. Here’s their comeback stage at Music Core.

#8 Younha “People”
This was one of the songs from her “Supersonic” album. It was her first release after moving to a new company, now known as C9 Entertainment. The album was a critical success, and she would join season 2 of “I Am A Singer” this era too. The MV features the Japanese version of the song, so here’s the audio video in Korean.
