Flashback Friday

Jan 20, 2023 14:03

Happy Friday! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back 10 years to the 3rd week in January, 2013. I hope you are in the mood for more ballads, Omona.

#3 Sunny Hill “Goodbye To Romance”
This was the lead single from the group’s EP “Antique Romance”, and tells the story of first loves. In 2019 the group made a comeback with some member changes. Two new members (including former Purfles leader Kunhee) were recruited, joining original members Seungah and Kota. Here’s a special live performance when the group performed for a KBS Culture Warehouse concert in 2020.

#2 Baek Ji Young featuring Yiruma “Hate”
This ballad features the pianist Yiruma, who would also accompany her on some music show performances. This was a non-album single, but would signal a comeback for her. A month later she held her first concert in 7 years, and a nationwide tour. It was at one of those tour stops that Jung Suk Won would publicly propose to her in March. They announced their engagement a month earlier, and would marry in June. Where has he been? Haven’t heard about him since the drug stuff in Australia. Anyway! The song would take the top spot upon its release, making news for knocking down a top girl group down to the #2 spot.

#1 Girls’ Generation “I Got A Boy”
AYO! GG! The group released this single, along with the album of the same name, on New Year’s Day 2013. I remember this era so clearly, yet so unsure if I liked it or not lol. I still don’t know! Both the song and the album would chart at the top. The song also won a bunch of awards, from domestic music shows and year end awards, but also was on many “best of” international lists. The MV also won the YouTube Music Awards award for Video Of The Year. Remember that? Tiffany went to accept the award and it felt like it was such a big deal. This would be their only Korean release for the year. The rest of the year was filled with tours and Japanese releases.

Honorable Mentions

#4 Jang Yoseop “Caffeine”
This was his solo debut. It was the title track for his solo debut EP “The First Collage”. It performed very well. Both the song and the album would chart in the top three. It is still his biggest selling solo song. I don’t know if I remember this song or not. I feel like I remember it happening, but don’t remember anything else. Here’s a somewhat recent performance of the song. It’s from a 2021 episode of Sketchbook, from when he was promoting his latest relase.

#10 JeA “While You’re Sleeping”
This was the lead single from her debut album, “Just JeA”. She was the last Brown Eyed Girls member to go solo. I don’t remember this song or era at all. But she sounds so good! Here’s the music video for the song. It feels like they just threw the camera around lol.
