Flashback Friday
First week of 2023 down! Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, let’s see what we were listening to in the 1st week in January, 2016.
#3 Yoon Mirae “This Love”
This was her first solo song in 4 years. She had been busy doing collabs (mostly with her husband and Bizzy), and some hit OST songs, but this single was her solo comeback. The ballad was a success, selling very well and hitting #1 on the charts. She didn’t promote the single on the music shows, and I couldn’t find a live stage, either. So here’s the music video again.
#2 PSY “Daddy”
This was one of lead singles from his sixth album, “Chiljip Psy-da”. The song would debut at the top spot. I don’t remember this era at all. Anything 2014-2017 PSY is just a big black hole for me. Like, there’s “Gentleman” and then “New Face”…I know nothing in between lol. Here’s a stage from his appearance on Sketchbook.
#1 EXO “Sing For You”
This was one of the singles from the group’s second special winter release of the same name. It was the first album to not feature Tao, who left the group a few months prior. The album broke the record for the fastest selling album on Hanteo, a record held by EXO themselves for “Exodus”. In a few months, EXO would again break their own record again, with the sales for “Ex’Act”. Here's their comeback stage on Music Core.
Honorable Mentions
#7 Zico “Eureka”
This was the title track from his solo debut EP, “Gallery”. It followed the success of “Boys and Girls”. This one was a hit too. The song would reach the top spot, and it is still one of his biggest selling singles. I don’t remember this at all. But then again I don’t pay much attention to him anyhow. Here’s a surprisingly good fancam of the song at Yonsei AKARAKA.
#9 Baek Yerin “Across The Universe”
This was the lead single from her solo debut EP, “Frank”. She wrote the lyrics for the songs on the album, and this song in particular was inspired by the Matt Damon movie “The Martian”. I’ve never seen it. I think the only Matt Damon movies I’ve seen were the Ocean series. Anyways. This song would peak at #7 on the charts. Here’s the live performance MV of the song.
