The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), a major Korean music awards ceremony, is slated to take place at CJ ENM Contents Studio in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, on Dec. 11.

Its organizer, CJ ENM, has not decided whether to take the awards online or not. The entertainment giant said in a statement Wednesday that it will "take the government's COVID-19 guidelines and the safety of people into consideration" before reaching a final decision.

The names of the K-pop stars joining the event will be announced in the coming months, and a plethora of high-profile singers are expected to be on hand. Last year, BTS, TWICE, SEVENTEEN, Monsta X and Stray Kids performed on the MAMA stage.

In the past, the MAMA was mostly held in Asian countries, including Japan, Hong Kong and Vietnam. But last year, CJ ENM ran it online from Korea due to the pandemic.

"Depression has taken over our society following the virus epidemic," CJ ENM's Music Content Director Kim Hyun-soo said. "We hope that we can revitalize the music industry by hosting the MAMA in Korea ― the home of K-pop ― and cheer people up via music."

The MAMA was launched in 1999 as the "Mnet KM Music Video Festival" (MKMF). It changed its name to MAMA in 2009.

Shoutout to the ones who can still remember it as "MKMF" too
