Flashback Friday

May 08, 2020 15:12

It’s Friday! Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we’re going back to the 2nd week in May, 2014. Some of the songs have been posted before, so we'll see some live stages.

#3 IU “My Old Story”
This was the single from “A Flower Bookmark”, an album which was filled with cover songs from the 1980s and 1990s. This song was originally released in 1985, and her version would peak at #2. Another song on the album, “The Meaning Of You” would end up being her biggest selling song of the year.

#2 Wheesung “Night And Day”
This was his first release after his return from the military. I like the song, I’ve always liked that chrous. The MV stars Girl’s Day Yura and Teen Top’s Cap. I don’t remember them at all though, only really remember the part of the music video where he’s just sitting in the ruins and the dancers dance around him. I hope he’s getting some help and getting healthy.

#1 Junggigo “Want U”
This was a non album single, and his only release of the year, although he did feature on a few songs. This would be his highest charting song to date. The original song features Beenzino, but he didn’t appear on the music shows. So I think that is rapper Olltii, who was on Show Me The Money 3, which was just about to start airing that July.

Honorable Mentions

#4 g.o.d “The Lone Duckling”
This song was released as a teaser before the group’s 15th anniversary. They would follow it up with a full album, their first release since they went on hiatus in 2005. Proceeds from the song raised money for the victims of the Sewol disaster, which happened a month earlier, and the group did not release a music video or promote on music shows. The only time they performed the song together was on a special Sketchbook episode months later.

#8 EXO “Overdose”
This was the lead single off of their third EP of the same name. It would end up being the last release that featured Kris and Luhan. The song was promoted in Korea and China by EXO-K and EXO-M, respectively, at the same time. It would win first place trophies in both countries. Here’s EXO-K’s comeback stage at Music Core. For some reason this is the EXO comeback I remember the most. Because I remember the maze. There was a maze this era, right?
