Dream Machine (Yet another article on K-Pop by western media)

In the early hours of the morning when Beatrice Phan finally shuts down her computer, she goes to bed with a handful of soft toys and her idols: boys with chiselled jaw-lines, straight noses, full lips, lustrous hair and most likely a bit of eyeliner. Perfect boys, pretty boys, boys who look like girls, the boy next door, the foppish, the sultry, ( Read more... )

I feel like there's a lot of cynicism when people write about K-pop in western media (well, actually in some asian media too lol) and I totally get it. But at the same time such cynicism and dissection of the Korean pop culture fan mentality makes it seem like it's actually something new, or unique to the expanse of fandom.

For the fans that do get hooked on K-pop to an obsessive point, where they spend up to $500 a month (seriously? what?!), if they didn't invest themselves emotionally and financially in K-pop, they would have probably found another outlet (another fandom, or whatever) to invest themselves in anyway.

I just realised I don't really have a point to make lol...
Having said that though, the K-pop industry have really good marketing skills.

Yeah, I admire their marketing ability, even though it seems evil sometimes. They have it down to an exact formula.

This. But I don't think it hurts anyone. As long as they don't become too obsessive.

Its a fantasy world and sometimes that's good.

Tho I'm surprised Miso was so open on her surgery.

I agree. As long as she can cover her basic expenses, I don't care if sis wants to spend $500 a month on K-pop. Who am I to judge? It doesn't affect me. It's not like the money would appear in my bank account if she didn't spend it, lol

The only part that surprised me was when the article said she spends up to 20 hours a day online. Was that a typo?! When does she sleep?!

I'm glad she was open about it. I think it's like dating - if more idols were open about their plastic surgery it would be less of a big deal.

yeah, good on Miso for being open about it but I cannot wrap my head around how young she is to be having surgery at all - 17 isn't even legally adult.
