Like Something More Than In My Mind
Kitayama/Yokoo/Fujigaya
PG, 298 words
Yokoo tries his best to ignore the looks of pure longing Fujigaya sends Kitayama’s way when he’s not looking.
Things are bad when Senga likens them unto a Hannah Montana song, but what makes Yokoo’s stomach twist is the truth. If this had been a movie, Fujigaya would already be in his arms with the credits rolling. Instead, he can only watch Fujigaya throw his heart away on Kitayama, and wonder if perhaps he should let his own go as well.
But it's hard to let old habits die, and so he holds on to his feelings because he knows that one day Fujigaya will turn around and realize that what he wants, what he needs, has been there all along.
~
Kitayama looks at Fujigaya, whose face is full of tentative hope; he looks at Yokoo, standing half in the shadows where he doesn’t think anyone notices.
“I’m sorry,” he finally says, “I can’t accept your feelings.”
(And if later Yokoo punches him in the jaw hard enough to draw blood in return for hurting Fujigaya - well, it’s better Kitayama’s lip than Yokoo’s heart.)
~
Fujigaya desperately wants to turn to Yokoo for comfort - Yokoo has always meant safety and love - but Fujigaya knows he deserves better. So when Yokoo wraps him in his arms, he finds himself pulling away from the all-too-comforting scent of that familiar cologne, afraid his hurt is painfully obvious. “I can’t… I don’t want to hurt you, Wataru.”
Instead, he flees the room whenever Kitayama enters.
~
Kitayama hates waiting, and being forced to watch Yokoo and Fujigaya dance around each other is like pulling teeth. It would be less painful, perhaps, if he could convince himself that he doesn’t want to kiss the smile back onto Fujigaya’s face quite so much.
