but just the other day on Wednesday October 1st I had finally beaten the video game Metal Gear Solid for the PSX.
I was already familiar with the story and some of the plot was already spoiled to me by some of my friends at school talking about the game. Typing this I remember about the first time I had heard of Metal Gear and played my first game. Unfortunately for me it was the crappiest one of the series. I was very young when I picked up Snakes Revenge for the NES. I've never heard of the game before or knew what it was about but I didn't care cause I was only staring at the awesome cover on the box. I was really young back then and really shitty at games. I was so young I never got past the first 5-10 minutes of the game where you're suppose to get past the jungle and get into the building... >.>;;;;
I was also had the story spoiled from playing MGS2 back in high school. I played MGS1 back then (when my PSX was still alive) in middle school. My friends were talking about it. Back then the greatest game to me on the PSX was Gran Turismo, but all my friends were about MGS this and that. So I rented the game. I remember finding out that the game was two discs long... didn't even get to the frackin second disc... Anyways I think the farthest I ever got was to the communications tower where you have to run up to the top after being discovered by a camera around the corner (way to go Snake...) and that was before I died a bajillion time to Mantis... I was younger back then so my gaming skill wasn't as good. I also wasn't so good at that type of a game. I played mostly mario, contra, starfox, and other misc sports games before my Playstation days.
Anyways, so yeah I played the game on the PC and it was ok except for some crappy CSs that wouldn't work (the real video stuff during Baker and at the ending). There was also another glitch with the PC version. It was a door that wouldn't open near the end of the game. Otacon was suppose to open it and did but didn't show up as open. I discovered on the forums that it was a bug with the game that you had to get around by enabling cheats via F8, but I was really surprised with the work Kojima's small team did on the game. The staff I heard was comprised of newbies that were just out of school. The story and it's layout was really good. Eventhough I knew what was going to eventually happen I didn't truly understand everything. The boss battles were also very fun. Some of the bosses were easier than others. To me Vulcan was the easiest. Even easier than Ocelot. The one I had the hardest time on was Liquid tho. Rex was definitely harder than Ray from MGS2 and being on the PC didn't help me much with fighting Liquid after Rex. Mantis tho this time around on the PC was much easier.
I also heard there was a Gamecube version of this game. I checked out the reviews after beating the PC version to see how they improved on it but found some positive and some negative ones. After reading up on them, I discovered that the 1st person view made the game too easy and that they had redone all the music except the ending... One of the main selling points to me about MGS was how well the action, gameplay, setting, story and music fit so well together. I really loved the MGS soundtrack. Sucks they didn't keep it for the GC version...
But the other person who really deserves a lot of credit (Kojima aside) is Yoji Shinkawa. He's the guy responsible for creating the overall look of the game and of future metal gear games to come. He's the guy that did all the artwork and conceptual designs for metal gear. The game really wouldn't have been the same if it didn't have that overall dark and mysterious look that the characters and background settings were given. Imagine if they kept that Mel Gibson/Michael Madsen look going on for Snake... I'm a real big fan of video game art. Shinkawa is really good and I consider him one of the best being up there with Amano and the like.
Metal Gear Solid is indeed up there as being one of thee best games I have ever played in my life. If it wasn't for Hideo and his vision of making an exact opposite to all the stuff that was being created at the time (Contra for example) we wouldn't have all these copy cats nowadays. This game is truly a masterpiece. A true work of art. Well I can't compare Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, MGS, Zelda, or Mario. They're all very different, but have unique memories in my heart ^^
Question of the day
Have you ever played a game that you knew what was going to happen, yet still felt that sense of shock from first completing it?
