Japan day 11 - Nara

Mar 19, 2012 02:10

Another day of back ache and umbrellas. Arly start and got the tyrain to Nara. Nice little town with one of the highest concentrations of unesco stes in the world. most of which are in a densely wooded park inhabited (or perhaps infested!) by deer. which are also preserved as a national treasure. Hence it's ok to feed them as long as it's only the official deer biscuits. At one point i hadf five of them competing to eat out of my hand! Nearly got into a fight with two of them as they insited on trying to eat a polythene bag someone had discarded. There was much tug of war-ing and foot stamping and head butting but as they'd had their antlers removed and i had my new rocks on i figured it was a fair fight.
the highlight was Todai-ji Daibutsu-den, the largest wooden building in the world housing a 430 tonne bronze budda. And 130kg of gold.
for tea i chose the only restaurant i could find in town with an english translation, and had the cheapest and nicest meal out so far. Deep fried tofu and soba noodle soup.
The supermarket was seling Japanese whiky in four litre plastic bottles for about £16!
Got back to Kyoto about 8pm and used the hotel reception phone to book a hostel in hiroshima for the next three nights.
