I don't think many people think he is hyper-masculine but that's the public image he tries to portray--saying he doesn't like sparkles and sequins, talking about butching up the sport, always going on about fast cars and sports. He's skated in sweat pants for shows! But tbqh, I feel like commentators make a bigger deal about it than he personally does (although that is quite probably my ridic Evan stanning coming out): they're always calling JW the "flamboyant" one and EL the "athletic" one and making a bfd about the contrast to cast JW in a negative light.
You're almost definitely right because you're a much bigger Evan fan than I am (I love my ~beautiful swan~ more, no matter how much I love the others). It just seems like every single thing I've ever, ever seen on him has been all OOH HE'S SO MAAANLY and I've felt like UH REALLY YOU GUYS pretty much every time.
I think that's one of the things people find kinda ridic about Evan - he's held up as this wonderful heterosexual hope, a manly man that isn't like that flamboyant, sparkly Johnny Weir. But, I mean, this is the guy that wore a costume designed by Vera Wang with snakes on it. And he's worn black feaethers and what have you. He, and his people or whatever, try to project this image of Evan that doesn't really fit with the reality we see...
It's basically to make Johnny Weir look bad... and because they want to pin their hopes on Evan as being the future of male American figure skating. Conservatism never left.
